Let’s go over history of Sound Mixing at Oscar, BAFTA and CAS since CAS’s inception in 1994 to see how they match up.
** = signifies winner
CAS BAFTA Oscar
The Hobbit The Hobbit Argo
** Les Miserables ** Les Miserables ** Les Miserables
Lincoln Django Unchained Lincoln
Skyfall Skyfall Skyfall
Zero Dark Thirty Life of Pi Life of Pi
We have to considered animated too, because some of those films, like Monsters University, might be nominated.
Inside Llewyn Davis, Captain Phillips and Gravity all look solid for Oscar noms, as they were nominated here and in BAFTA. If we go by nominees here and on BAFTA, the last two slots would be between All Is Lost, Rush, Lone Survivor and Iron Man 3, with the a chance of Monsters University getting a nom. But we could also be surprised by some nominee in the sidelines.
My predictions based on both would be:
2. Inside Llewyn Davis (musicals/films with lots of music get nommed usually, and here there’s also the live singing aspect)
3. Captain Phillips
4. All Is Lost
5. Toss-up between Rush and Iron Man 3
As for who wins here, I’m still not sure if it’s Gravity or Inside Llewyn Davis, but I think the latter wil win the Oscar, and that Gravity will take Sound Editing.
What will win – Gravity
What should win – Lone Survivor or Captain Philips
Ooh, I mean this seriously: I did not find anything special about the sound work in Captain Phillips and am worried that I might have missed something, so please enlighten me.
Gravity will win but LOL @ the Rush snub.
I have seen a few people predict The Lone Survivor for a sound nomination today. It looked like a random nom at first, but I’m starting to wonder about it’s chances…
Those last two slots are kinda tricky to predict.
