It was a toss up between that and Zero Dark Thirty, but I think it will have missed out. It did do well with the technical categories, and took Director, but not sure if it would have broken into the top five of Best Picture.

According to the GoldDerby odds, cutting the lineup off at 5 the last 4 years would have been:

2014–Boyhood, Birdman, The Imitation Game, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Theory of Everything
2013–12 Years a Slave, Gravity, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Nebraska
2012–Lincoln, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Les Miserables, Silver Linings Playbook
2011–The Artist, The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris

I tend to agree with these, despite my hope that the Academy would still have made room for Whiplash and The Tree of Life.

In the years of mandated 10, here are my best guesses:

2010–The Social Network, The King’s Speech, Inception, The Fighter, Black Swan
2009–Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, Up in the Air

Life of Pi had 11 nominations (only once has a film with 9 nominations been snubbed – in 1969 and without picture Life of Pi had 10 nominations).
Life of Pi was nominated by the Globes, the Critics’ Choice, the BAFTA’s.
It received nominations from the DGA, PGA, WGA, ASC, the Cinema Editors Guild. It only didn’t get a SAG nomination and with basically one actor for the majority of the film (and an unknown one), it makes sense.
The film is definitely more likely to get into best picture than Zero Dark Thirty. Bigelow’s film was widely criticized at the time of the nominations and I believe that it could have been snubbed in picture. And Les Miserables would have been snubbed in every case. The film was met with mixed reviews and it was snubbed in directing, writing and editing. It would have been a Cold Mountain case.

    Hugo
    Midnight In Paris
    Moneyball

The Help had major support back but I don’t see it as a best picture nominee. It made money, it won three SAG Awards and it still didn’t manage many nominations in categories where it was considered a lock: adapted screenplay, original song, costume design, production design, even film editing. I remember very well that people expected it to gather some 7-9 nominations and it got only acting nominations and picture. I believe that it could have missed in a field of five. And of course, in a field of five, the DGA is always the best barometer and it didn’t get a nomination. Not that DGA nominee Fincher got into the Oscar line-up.

    2012
    Argo
    Beasts of the Southern Wild
    Life of Pi

I suspect there was broad support for the film. It got into directing, writing and actress without much precursors love.

    2013
    American Hustle
    Gravity

    Nebraska
    12 Years A Slave

    Scorsese as a lone director.

The hardest year to figure out the top five would definitely be choosing from this year’s eight nominees. Most of us can probably agree that the top three contenders were Birdman, Boyhood, and The Grand Budapest Hotel but the last two slots could have gone to any combination between American Sniper, The Imitation Game, Theory of Everything, and Whiplash.
