As often as certain films dominate the season, there are also those films and performances that NEVER get any traction. Despite critical acclaim and/or box office success, they can’t seemed to get noticed at awards time.

What films and performances have you scratching your head at their exclusion from the awards discussion?

I haven’t been able to see enough films yet to comment, lol. I just don’t like seeing zero comments. Anyway, I can say that I personally feel that Katharine Ross and the 1975 film Stepford Wives should have gotten more attention at Oscar time, especially since many complain that the Best Actress lineup was extremely thin at the time. It also was odd that Kate Winslet hasn’t gotten any traction for The Dressmaker- I haven’t seen it, but it’s odd that she’s gotten zero notices for it.

    (Near) Completely Shut Out Films
A Monster Calls – this film broke me
Christine – Rebecca Hall should be in the fold for an Actress nod

    Films That Deserve More
Arrival – should be more in the convo for Best Picture
Nocturnal Animals – brilliantly gripping and complex, don’t understand the hate

Miss Sloan. Jessica gives a career best performance and it’s such an audience pleaser (too bad it bombed at BO but its audience scores were excellent!)

Don’t Think Twice should’ve been a Best Ensemble SAG nominee and contender in Original Screenplay.

Hidden Figures, Moonlight, and Jackie. Yes, they {Moonlight & Jackie‘s cast, crew, and films their selves} are Oscar contenders, were box office hits, and have garnered rave reviews but I say they’re underrated because it’s likely that the whimsical romantic comedy La La Land and snooze fest known as Manchester By the Sea will lead with multiple nominations and no doubt, multiple wins.

As for Hidden Figures. It’s the kind of film that is often overlooked by the Academy for several reasons: it doesn’t tie in with the repetitive films they nominate again and again, features an ensemble cast of African-Americans, and yet again a film they’ll ignore because it exposes the truth about how African-Americans have played a pivotal role in American history. It’s the type of film that’ll receive Golden Globes & NAACP Image Awards as consolation prizes. I digress….

As long as Viola Davis wins Best Supporting Actress (she was snubbed for Best Actress for 2011’s The Help) and Denzel Washington as Best Actor for Fences, Emma Stone or Natalie Portman as Best Actress for La-La Land or Jackie, Supporting Actress nominations for Lupita N’yongo in Qween of Katwe Octavia Spencer and Taraji P. Henson for Hidden Figures (hopefully, a win for either N’yongo or Henson but I’m not pushing), I’ll be so proud and it’ll restore my faith in the Academy Awards. Is that too much to ask?

Sing Street, it should get nominated in more categories than just Best Original Song.
10 Cloverfield Lane, if it’s was starred by Jennifer Lawrence, they would give her another nomination for sure. John Goodman is Oscar worthy.
Your Name, it should be the frontrunner for Best Animated Film.
Toni Erdmann, Sandra Huller should be in contention for Best Actress.

The Nice Guys. What a big surprise it was!!! I think Ryan Gosling was a big standout in the film. Really funny and entertaining. 100% recommended!
