When will the GD experts/editors add their predictions for Best Foreign Language nominees? Not until the shortlist is announced? What about Foreign category of Golden Globes?

I imagine that they’ll set it up when the shortlist is announced, given how that’s what was done with Documentary Feature. They likely figure that it’s more efficient to set up selections for films that will actually be eligible for the nomination.

Yeah, there’s 81 films submitted. That’s a lot to put in a predictions centre, it would take forever to set up.

How many of these have you actually seen? GOODNIGHT MOMMY doesn’t deserve a spot amongst the Frontrunners, in your opinion, but LAMB and ARABIAN NIGHTS do??

Do you think Goodnight Mommy makes more sense among the Academy branch’s tastes than Lamb? Arabian Nights I included more for its festival exposure and critical plaudits but it makes more sense for the executive committee, which I guess Goodnight Mommy can also be recognized by but seems like much more of a longshot.

There’s no question that GM is a tough sell for the general voting body (esp the ending when it basically turns into torture porn). But it also has a campaign behind it and it’s clear these two directors are being set up for big H’wood studio work. It has major advocates with deep pockets behind it. So it seems the likelihood of it making the shortlist is very high. After the shortlist, who knows.

LAMB is just a funny choice to peg as a frontrunner over titles like A WAR, VIVA, IRAQI ODYSSEY and GM, given that there’s no campaign behind it. It would really have to be plucked by the exec committee and there’s so much competition this year, it’s hard to imagine it would slip in.

I haven’t seen Lamb, but the underdog list is more of my attempt to pick out the less publicized or less expected choices that sound sensible to me as having a chance.

I love this category and I try to see all five nominated films eventually, but let’s face it, it doesn’t really matter what the four other films are going to be.  Son of Saul is winning the Oscar, unless something goes very, very, very, very, wrong.
