Almost every year a nominated actor or actress will return as a nominee for the following ceremony. Which actress has the best chance for the 2017 Oscars?

    Cate Blanchett
    Brie Larson
    Jennifer Lawrence
    Jennifer Jason Leigh
    Rooney Mara
    Rachel McAdams
    Charlotte Rampling
    Saoirse Ronan
    Alicia Vikander
    Kate Winslet

Alicia Vikander may have the best chance for The Light Between Oceans. The trailer really showcases her, and we see a glimpse of the emotional range she’ll have to cover in the role.

    There’s a shot for:
    Brie Larson – Free Fire
    Cate Blanchett – Weightless
    Jennifer Lawrence – Passengers
Rooney Mara – Una and/or Lion
    Kate Winslet – Collateral Beauty
    Jennifer Jason Leigh – LBJ

I honestly feel like Vikander, Lawrence, and Mara have a great shot but Blanchett is probably a sure thing.

I doubt Blanchett is a sure thing for Weightless; even the starriest of Malick’s casts have not received a single Oscar nomination between them, including his two Best Picture nominees.

To me Vikander seems the most likely to repeat (this time in Lead Actress) for The Light Between Oceans, but there seems to be quite heavy competition this year for lead actresses, sight unseen.

First of all, WEIGHTLESS isn’t coming out until 2017 so Blanchett is out. Not only will Larson not happen this year, but she’ll never happen again so consider her out, too.

No Ronan. No Ramping. No McAdams.

I don’t think there’s room for Mara to break through in such a small film. JJL benefited a lot last year from her own personal hype, which won’t be the case this year so she’s out.

I don’t think PASSENGERS is going to register as an awards vehicle whatsoever–it’s almost entirely romcom territory if we’re to trust the script that leaked. Out.

That leaves Winslet and Vikander, but LOL at COLLATERAL being a thing and LOL at THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS being good.

My answer is none of them.

Yeah these were the ones I was going to say but I would also add Soairse Ronan for The Seagull based on a famous play, Vikander for Light Between Oceans or possibly Tulip Fever, Rooney Mara also for The Secret Scripture (a Jim Sheridan movie), Winslet for The Dressmaker, and Charlotte Rampling for The Sense of an Ending. I think Vikander is probably the strongest with Light Between Oceans followed by Lawrence and Mara for Una

    Vikander, then Lawrence, then Mara.

Rooney Mara, Kate Winslet, and Alicia Vikander, very likely. Lawrence’s film might either be this year’s Martian or just a simple commercial play.

    For this year

    Amy Adams
    Kate Winslet
    Meryl Streep
    Cate Blanchett
    Alicia Vikander.

It is too early to predict for next year’s winner, but i’m pretty sure that one of them could be te winner for next year

I’m guessing this year will be an exception.

Never underestimate her ability to go in Supporting Actress category. I wouldn’t be surprised if she pulled the same shtick again.

Difficult for me to dismiss Weightless, entirely because of it’s Director. And what a cast!
But Malick never scores for his actors, regardless of their worthiness.
