Are the any movies that you find to be ghastly over-praised at this board? Which movies are people predicting for nominations (in any category) that you just want to shake your head at?January 22, 2012 at 11:47 am #52532
Definitely “War Horse”. A lot of people here keep talking about how it will be nominated for best Picture even though the guilds didn’t love it, even though box office sucks, even though critics aren’t passionate about it… And to make matters worse, it’s one of these films where Spielberg gives in to all of his worst, most cheapily manipulative impulses.January 22, 2012 at 11:48 am #52533
I agree; I have it in my top 10 for Best Pic but I think Spielberg gets snubbed.January 22, 2012 at 11:50 am #52534
You mean, band-wagon jumping Trent? As opposed to someone actually coming to that conclusion by themselves?
Lol. A tongue-bleeding topic.
I’ll say none, although, I’ve noticed some who praise or criticize without having seen the film in question based on other people’s opinions.January 22, 2012 at 11:52 am #52535
I actually saw War Horse the day it came out, thank you. As a Jew, I needed something to do on Christmas.January 22, 2012 at 12:16 pm #52536
Towards the beginning of the season, I’d have to say Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close. There wasn’t a single good reason as to why it should be a nominee except the usual oscar politics. Then everything sort of went downhill for that movie (Thankfully).
As of now: I would say War Horse, The Help, and to some degree Bridesmaids (because it’s well received) and Ides of March (because after the GG, it’s coming back into the conversation again).January 22, 2012 at 12:37 pm #52537

You arent addressing me, are you?
I keep forgetting to preface my posts with :”This is not in response to any other post”.
I wont watch “War Horse”. Forget it.January 22, 2012 at 12:38 pm #52538
I was adressing anybody who thinks I review without watching.
See the play, not the movie.January 22, 2012 at 4:01 pm #52540
On the other hand, I actually think people are underestimating War Horse. It can easily sweep the craft (as seanyflynn would call it) nominations as fillers. Score, Cinematography, and Editing are the categories it can easily get in. Then it can sneak in Art Direction, Costume, and one of the Sounds and/or Picture. That’s 5-6 nods already. I think it will do well more than Tree of Life on those categories, as I’m seeing ToL getting in for Visuals Effects and Cinematography only.January 22, 2012 at 6:08 pm #52541

The people who liked War Horse really liked it and arent afraid to say so. The more people bitch about how sappy it is and cut up the horses for ’emoting’, the more I want to see it. And no, I probably wont see it. Lol.
I certainly like most of the people and techs who worked on the film though, so more power to them just from a personal perspective.January 22, 2012 at 7:56 pm #52542
I really liked ‘War Horse’, very much so. I never felt manipulated.January 22, 2012 at 8:09 pm #52543
Back in January 2011, when I read the synopsis of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, it sounded like too much of a contender to actually end up contending … if that makes any sense. Sometimes, all of the factors add up to being Oscar bait but still result in a boring or under-performing film. Films like Charlie Wilson’s War come to mind, which coincidentally also featured Tom Hanks playing a role that, on paper, sounded like a winner.January 22, 2012 at 8:09 pm #52544
The only people who felt manipulated by a war horse’s movie has serious problems and need to take care of it immediately, lamest excuse ever.
