For me, it was Costumes. I underestimated 3 time, now 4 time Oscar Winner Colleen Atwood for Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them. I confess I didn’t even predict it for a nomination and had it in the number 5 spot! I mainly didn’t pick it because Oscars have a history of not awarding anything from the Harry Potter Universe. Of course I’m kicking myself now!

I only got 16/24, so I missed heaps, but my worst miss would have been Makeup and Hairstyling – I had Suicide Squad in third place! Oh the shame.

Not a bad one to miss 🙂 I was tempted to pick it but couldn’t get over the abysmal reviews. Suicide Squad must be the lowest rated Oscar winner in history!

I figured that the Suicide Squad makeup would be one of those iconic things that gets overlooked because the Oscars are too snooty.  The song category is the worst at that.

Sound editing was the only category that I had the winner in third and costumes was the only one that I had in fourth.

Costume Design obviously. Then, Sound Editing.

Production Design. I had Passengers in first place. Silly me thinking they’d choose something that isn’t based in LA.

Best Picture- LLL, Costume Design- Jackie, Sound Mixing- LLL, Editing- Hacksaw Ridge, Makeup/Hairstyling- Star Trek, Doc Short- Extremis, and Live Action Short- Ennemis Interieurs.

For an award show that was so all over the place i’m pretty surprised I got 17/24.

Prideful, Passengers actually wasn’t a bad pick. It won the guild award! I think I had it at #2 behind La La because of that. I didn’t go with it for the same reason I mistakenly missed makeup. The reviews were low enough to make me reconsider.

I’m right there with you all. I missed Make-up, Costumes, Sound (both), Doc Short & Picture.

On Sound, I heard a good strategy on Sasha Stone’s podcast. Someone said, I think it was Marshall Flores, that it’s almost best to just always go with the same in both editing & mixing. Sure there’s often a split but you are nearly always certain to get at least one vs. missing both. I was tempted to go with Hacksaw in both. I still would have gotten Editing wrong but I would have picked up points for Mixing. Sound nearly always gets me because I might get the right two but in the wrong categories which is frustrating.

Worst miss was costume design. Had it in 4th. Only had 2 at 3rd and all my other misses were my alts.

I too had Sing dead last. Also, I had Fantastic Beasts down in 4th in Costume Design.

those Short catagories are always the things that I lose. This year I lost spectacularly in those except for “Piper” (which to be honest I only chose because I liked the name).

I had Fantastic Beasts at #4 for costume design and the Documentary/Live Action shorts winners at #3. If I actually watched the shorts like a good predictor I probably could have done better…
