Helen Mirren will probably become the second one soon. (This has probably been discussed already but I felt so pleased with myself when I knew the answer. I thought I’d give the rest of you the same fun.)

    Ooh. Great trivia question.

Answer is Lila Kedrova for Zorba the Greek. She won her Oscar in 1964 and then her Tony in 1984.

Ha, I didn’t realize there was a previous case. Most people tend to win the Tony first and get enough press for it that they end up being cast in the movie adaptation (which often leads to a nomination or win).

    As did:

    José Ferrer, Cyrano de Bergerac

Shirley Booth, Come Back, Little Sheba

Yul Brynner, The King and I

    Rex Harrison, My Fair Lady

    Anne Bancroft, The Miracle Worker

Paul Scofield, A Man for All Seasons

Jack Albertson, The Subject Was Roses

In every case either way, it was the same project transferred from stage to screen or vice versa. In the Mirren case, it’s not exactly the same because the projects are different but Jose Ferrer who won an Oscar, tony and Emmy. All for playing Cyrano de Bergerac.

José Ferrer didn’t win the Emmy.

Such a brief list! I think equally telling are the roles that resulted in both Tony and Oscar wins

    Hamlet from Hamlet

    Catherine Sloper from The Heiress

Georgie Elgin from The Country Girl

Serafina Delle Rose from The Rose Tattoo

    Anita from West Side Story

Martha from Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf?

Eleanor of Aquitaine from The Lion in WInter

Jean Brodie from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

    Antonio Salieri from Amadeus

Carrie Watts from The Trip to Bountiful

Luis Molina from Kiss of the Spider Woman

    Effie White from Dreamgirls

Sarah Norman from Children of a Lesser God
