Another poster on this board once referred to the Best Supporting Actress category as a “trap” – that the ladies who win it almost never win Best Actress later in their career.
After doing some research, I found this to be almost 100% true. Although five ladies have won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, only two of them won Best Actress AFTER winning Best Supporting Actress:
Meryl Streep – Supporting for Kramer v. Kramer in 1979, lead for Sophie’s Choice in 1982.
Jessica Lange – Supporting for Tootsie in 1982, lead for Blue Sky in 1994.
Which brings me to the question:
Which supporting actress winners can join this club?

Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Rachel Weisz, Penélope Cruz, and Anne Hathaway are all lead actresses. If Philomena hits, Judi Dench may have a shot.
Anna Paquin is still quite young – had been offered the lead part in Campion’s Top of the Lake miniseries but couldn’t do it because – I believe – she was pregnant.
For now, these women are some of the most likely contenders.May 21, 2013 at 5:23 pm #102240
I agree with Logan but I’d also like to add Juliette Binoche.May 21, 2013 at 5:26 pm #102241
Hathaway, Blanchett, Dench and Jolie will probably win another one soon.May 21, 2013 at 10:16 pm #102242
I always thought Cate Blancett, Judi Dench and Renee Zellweger had a shot, probably unlikely for Dench due to her age and Zellweger because her star has dwindled.
Anne Hathaway is the most likely to win a second Oscar, and is a leading lady so will hopefully get the award she deserves.
I doubt any of the current winners can do it because usually to win a second Oscar you have to be phenomenal to justify a second statuette (Dianne Wiest, Tom Hanks, DDL – TWBB, Hillary Swank et al).
Many of the current Best Supporting Actres winners are either flukes (CZJ, Jennifer Hudson, Rachel Weisz) or is a compensation for losing out of a previous Best Actress nom (Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, Renee Zellweger, Cate Blanchett). Of the others there performance was phenomenal but they have failed to appear on Oscars radar since and with each passing year the odds get worse for a repeat (Monique, Octavia Spencer, Jennifer Connelly, Marcia Gay Hudson).
Marisa Tomeii, Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton have the acting chops to bring home a lead win.
Anne Hathaway has the star power and momentum to actually do it.May 22, 2013 at 5:09 am #102243
With the right part, I think the safest bet despite her advancing years is Vanessa Redgrave.May 22, 2013 at 6:08 am #102244
I’d never known only two actresses won in lead after supporting. But I forgot there are actresses/actors who won in supporting after lead.
Hathaway, Jolie, Blanchett and now Dench (thanks to Weinstein) seem to be in the best positions to win in lead. If they really will, time will tell.June 6, 2013 at 2:05 pm #102245
