The Sundance fave has a trailer:
JK Simmons and Miles Teller look strong here.July 24, 2014 at 1:20 pm #156734

I’ve loved Simmon’s work for such a long time. A nomination finally? If he gains some traction and good notices for this, it’s a foundation down the (immediate) road, if he puts in another (dramatic) performance right afterwards. I’m guessing that no nomination this time, but maybe next. It recalls Jack Black a bit for me, in Bernie.July 24, 2014 at 2:03 pm #156736
I’m so excited for this. The studio is releasing it at the right time, and if they campaign well enough, J.K. Simmons has a strong chance of getting an Oscar nomination. The dude deserves it. He’s not gotten a single nomination for an Oscar, Golden Globe, or Emmy. He’s basically the poster boy for underrated actors.July 24, 2014 at 2:26 pm #156737
J.K. Simmons looks really good in this. Here’s hoping.
My current predictions:
* Robert Duvall, The Judge
Edward Norton, Birdman
Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher
J.K. Simmons, Whiplash
Tom Wilkinson, SelmaJuly 24, 2014 at 2:29 pm #156738
Give him an nomination, but don’t give him any lemons.
“I DON’T WANT YOUR DAMN LEMONS, WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THESE?”July 24, 2014 at 2:45 pm #156739
I think a nomination for him is most definite. It is a sort of situation like with Richard Jenkins in The Visitor. A siuation where the academy decides to give a nomination to the character actor.July 24, 2014 at 3:09 pm #156740
I think it’s very likely. Respected character actor, never been nominated before, acclaimed “best of his career” reviews, the type of tough-love mentor role that does well in this category (Pat Morita, Burgess Meredith, Geoffrey Rush, etc.), 2nd lead (i believe) competing in the supporting category. If the season really fills up than he’ll have to fight tooth and nail to get in, but right now I think he has a great chanceJuly 24, 2014 at 5:05 pm #156741
I’m willing to put him as the frontrunner based solely on that trailer. If he has any sensitive moments to complement that intensity, then I would put some money on him getting nominated. I’m not willing to say that he ‘should’ until I see it, but I certainly hope it’s worthy.

Looks intriguing! If the movie does well critically, I think Simmons stands a very good chance!July 24, 2014 at 6:56 pm #156743
I think he is overdue and this looks like it will be pretty good it was a huge hit at SundanceJuly 24, 2014 at 7:25 pm #156744
This looks awesome! Can’t wait!July 24, 2014 at 8:53 pm #156745
This looks intenseJuly 24, 2014 at 9:37 pm #156746
I also hope that Melissa Benoist from Glee has some good moments. She is very talented and I hope this is big enough to make her a rising star.
