After tonight”s rather predictable SAG results, I have decided to create this thread in order to promote negativity and bitching about how this season, so “wide open” a month ago has now become extremely dull- Picture and Director are still races, but the acting races have really become boring- we all know Leo, Larson, Stallone, and Vikander are winning next month. I create this thread in protest for the horrendous boredom these 4 categories are for us Oscar-watchers every single year. Goldderby should go on strike.

I agree it’s become a predictable parade, mainly because of all the televised precusors cramming their shows back to back to see “who can predict the Oscars”.

Back in the 90s and early 2000s when the SAGs first started, there was still a larger gap until the Oscars- which would air in the spring. This is why upsets could happen (ala Berry and Washington in 2001, Polanski and Brody in 2002, etc). There was more space for voters to think for themselves and not allow pressure and media hype to sway their thinking. I do also think that DiCaprio and Vikander are very deserving. I don’t think Larson is, she would be middle choice for me. I think Rampling and Ronan are miles better, and if this was the old school days we might get a upset. But those days are, alas, probably gone until a wrench is thrown in.

I mean, we can hope for Vikander to lose, but she probably won”t- Mara is officially done even if she wins BAFTA- they obviously liked Carol a lot more then we did. Winslet”s chances are pretty weak after her loss tonight, although a BAFTA win for her would help her more then Mara. McAdams is an extreme long shot and Leigh would only be on the radar if she wins BAFTA.

@JoeBurns: do you think Stallone wins it all now? Will BAFTA have any impact, or do you think they too will go with Elba? I see Bale being done sadly, even though I was rooting for him. And I think Rylance still has a shot with the Brits.

No, Sly will win unless he does something offensive before voting or Idris Elba wins in a write-in ballot situation.

I just cannot believe the Academy is going to reward Alicia Vikander’s newcomer hit year when they didn’t award Jessica Chastain for being way more awesome in way more awesome films in 2011. Life is unfair.

The Oscars have never really been about the drama. Girls watch for the dresses and fashion I guess, and I watch because it’s a once a year occasion and I’m a movie buff

They have been following her career closely since A Royal Affair . It was impossible not to see her great potential. She was perfect in Testament of youth too. And this is her year with Danish girl and Ex Machina.

Couldn’t agree more. Inhad high hopes a month or so ago but they will inevitably as dull as ever in a months time (Although I’m not sold on Stallone yet).

Who do you think could win instead? Even after the SAG win for Elba, I’m still not 100% convinced myself. But I put that down to paranoia and the sometimes surprising nature of Oscar.

The supporting races are still not done deals. Let alone BP and BD. This year is anything but another boring, excitingless and predictable one.

The problem with awards races in modern era is that everyone gives an award. Dianne Wiest won probably 5 total awards for Bullets over Broadway. Patricia Arquette won 1293819289124 prizes.
