With the Oscar nominations coming Thursday morning, most of the contenders are for the most part set in stone, or are they? I have compiled a list of possible contenders that are ready to pounce and pull an out-of-nowhere surprise. If there’s one that I missed (and there probably is), vote ‘Other’ and/or say so in the comments.
I would love to see Leo get in because his work on Wolf is just simply one of his best even if the movie manages to be its controversial self, possibly taking out Tom or Robert or even Bruce Dern, I feel.
FYC: Ready Player One. Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, Original Score, Production Design, Director and BEST PICTURE (make it happen Oscars!!)January 10, 2014 at 8:40 pm #130896
Linda Fiorentino had a better chance at getting nomined for The Last Seduction than an actor in a Harmony Korine picture does (which is to say no chance at all).January 10, 2014 at 9:07 pm #130897
Leo, Amy, and Sally aren’t really surprises per se. They’re cusp nominees, have precursors and vying for the last spot. If they don’t show up, that just means not enough votes 🙁
As opposed to someone like James Franco, who’s not expected to be nominated at all or have precursors. and yes, I am very much hoping for a James Franco nomination.January 10, 2014 at 10:12 pm #130898
Jeremy Renner – Supporting Actor, American Hustle.January 11, 2014 at 1:09 am #130899
A few surprises that I’m hoping/would like to see/would make the category more exciting:
Amy Adams – Best Supporting Actress for ‘Her’
James Franco – Best Supporting Actor for ‘Spring Breakers’
Jeremy Renners – Best Supporting Actor for ‘American Hustle’
ScarJo – Best Supporting Actress for ‘Her’January 11, 2014 at 1:56 am #130900
I hope Her gets a lot of nominations.
I voted for The Lone Ranger. I actually thing that the movie will score double nomination. Makeup and VFX.January 11, 2014 at 5:28 am #130901
If HER was nommed for
PIcture, Director, Actor, orig. Screenplay, art direction, song,
but I fear it will only be 1 nomintion for orig. screenplay…January 11, 2014 at 7:52 am #130902
I’m actually predicting Adams, DiCaprio, and Hawkins already, because I think that they all will get their deserved recognition. (I have Adams replacing Streep, DiCaprio replacing Redford, and Hawkins replacing Roberts)

Scarlett Johansson, please.January 11, 2014 at 12:06 pm #130906
Yes, Leo/Amy/Sally are 5th-6th.
It’s not like Jackie Weaver in Silver Linings.January 11, 2014 at 1:10 pm #130907
Will Forte will be the big surprise.January 11, 2014 at 1:53 pm #130908
At least Jacki Weaver had some nominations.
What about Maggie Gyllenhaal in Crazy Heart? This was a real surprise.January 11, 2014 at 1:58 pm #130909
Jacki Weaver’s Australian Film Institute and Chlotrudis noms weren’t exactly primo Oscar-predicting material.
The latter happened after the Oscar nom. And the former was a random category of “Discretionary AACTA International.”
