The Academy seems to love nominating unexpected actors and actresses
This year, we had Demian Bichir, who very few had even heard of before he was nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards
In 2011, we had John Hawkes and Mark Ruffalo, both who were snubbed at the Golden Globes, but did receive SAG bids.
In 2010, we had Maggie Gyllenhaal, who received only two other bids for this film (a Prism Award and Dallas-Forth Worth CA Award)
In 2009, Richard Jenkins was nominated after a SAG nomination.
Who could be the surprise nominee(s) next year?October 22, 2012 at 12:18 am #72620
Adam Sandler as “Hamlet” (“To pee, or not to pee, that is the question…”)
Mel Gibson as “Tevye” (“If I were a rich man, yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum. All day long I’d complain about those lousy Hollywood Jews, if I were a wealthy man!”)
Kristin Stewart as “Madame Curie” (“She was looking for a longer-lasting nail polish, but she discovered uranium!”)
Denzel Washington as “Sparky” (“Two days shy of retirement from the police force, Sparky gets framed for murder! Now he has just 48 hours to find the killer and collect his pension!”)
Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner as “Bow” and “Arrow” (“Talk about meeting cute–a propensity for deadly weapons brought them together! But can they work out their differences and find true love, or will they have to shoot each other first?”)October 22, 2012 at 12:45 am #72621

Perhaps an actor (male or female) from The Paperboy. I’m having trouble choosing between Macy Gray, Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey, and John Cusack. They would all need crictical support for this to come to fruition.October 22, 2012 at 9:49 am #72630
I’m a fan of The Paperboy, but there isn’t a chance in the world any of the decent performances will be nominated. It got bad reviews, the film is dying, I doubt they even bother sending the screener unless they are contractually obligated.October 22, 2012 at 8:58 pm #72631
– Jack Black in Bernie.
– Matthew McConaughey in Killer Joe. [NOT Magic Mike]
– Meryl Streep in Hope Springs.
– Viola Davis in Won’t Back Down.October 22, 2012 at 9:18 pm #72632
Wes Anderson, Director, knocking out a high profile one, like Steven Spielberg. Ha.October 22, 2012 at 10:51 pm #72633
Perhaps Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thenardier can get in Best Supporting Actress. She’s certainly not a low profile contender (like Demian Bichir), but hasn’t really been in the awards conversation yet since her role is very under wraps. Could be a welcome surprise.
Also, now that Jessica Chastain is confirmed lead for Zero Dark Thirty… if it’s as killer a role as she said it was, I’d love to see her nominated.
