I recently rewatched Whoopi Goldberg’s amazing Oscar turn in the 1990 hit “Ghost”. As you can see, I clearly enjoyed her performance, I would even go as far and consider her one of the best supporting actress winners of all time. What do you think? Did she win easily? Or who else out of this group came close?

    The nominees were:

    Lorraine Bracco in “Good Fellas”
    Annette Bening in “The Grifters”
    Whoopi Goldberg in “Ghost”
Diane Ladd in “Wild at Heart”
Mary McDonnell in “Dances with Wolves”

I think it was such a great year. For me its a tie between Lorraine, Whoopi or Diane. They were all pretty amazing but if I had to vote for one it would be Diane Ladd, she was simply amazing and extremely terrifying and it would be nice for a Lynch film to be recognised for acting after so many snubs from his films.

I don’t have a problem with Whoppi’s win. She was fine, and it was nice to see a comedic role win. However, the best performance that deserved to win for me was Dianne Ladd’s wonderfully crazy performance in Wild at Heart. The scene where she smears red lipstick over her face was awesome and iconic.

I rank Whoopi fourth of the nominees that year.
For me, totally undeserving….but it was the start
of many more undeserving sup. actress wins..

for me..BENING AND BRACCO were both brilliant
and i wouldve been happy with either winning.
Diane Ladd also close behind them….i found Mary
    McDonnell boring and 1 note..

On the Bening note, I think Bening should have been nominated for Supporting Actress for American Beauty in 1999… She would have an Oscar on her mantle now if she had campaigned for that category. But I think Goldberg deserved the gong for Ghost… she was hilarious

To me it is one of the most overrated performances in one of the most overrated movies ever. It wasn’t a real “win”. It was more of a “Ooops, sorry about last year,Boo”

To me Lorraibe was overrated. Whoopi was the favorite, she won BAFTA, the Golden Globe, and the Oscar. Also some other awards…

Get out of here with that. Annette Bening is a Best Actress martyr.

Once the Academy inexplicably failed to nominate Shirley MacLaine for Postcards from the Edge, a win for Whoopi was expected.

What Whoopi did in Ghost is the kind of comedic performance that deserves to win an Oscar.

Whoopi Goldberg deserved the Oscar for her fantastic comedic performance in Ghost.  She was a huge standout back in 1990, and was a huge part of film working as well as it did.  I loved what she brought to Ghost.  How about the sequence when she goes to the bank?  Comic gold.  That’s my favorite part of the entire film.  “Can I have another card?  I signed the wrong name.”  OR “What’s a nun going to do with four million dollars?  She can’t even buy underwear.”

I remember reading that Jackee Harry (Sandra from 227) almost got the part before Patrick stepped in and demanded that they cast Whoopi.

Loved Whoopi’s win in “Ghost”! The performance still holds up to this day, and just for a rare comedic performance that’s worth the praise going the distance to the win is something I’ll gladly support.
