As my title says – why did Kim Novak not get a standing ovation at this year’s Oscars?  Is it because Ellen’s intro was so quick?  Just wondering…….I was so surprised!

C’mon would you stand up for that outfit she was wearing? She looked like a hausfrau dressed for the Olive Garden followed
by a night at the community theatre’s production of ” Bell, Book and Candle “.

Because, although worldwide she’s a Hitchockian muse/icon, no one cares about her in Hollywood.

Standing ovations are so odd. And kind of hypocrital and moved by the wind, randomly.

None of the 2007 big 6 winners received a standing ovation (Coen Brothers, Day-Lewis, Cotillard, Swinton, Bardem… And they are probably the best top 6 bunch of winners of the decade).

What’s most strange, they stood up for Spencer, Streep and Plummer, but not for Dujardin in 2011. They probably thought: “That French bastard!”

Ellen introduced Kim Novak as a “Hollywod legend”…….I thought they would have shown their respect with a standing ovation….not to mention the fact it had been so many years since she appeared on the Oscars telecast.  I always like to see the “older” stars  involved such as Kim Novak an Sidney Poitier.

That was rather sad. Especially given that Vertigo had recently been upped to supplant Citizen Kane as ‘all time great film’. Though nothing at the telecast compared to the onslaught of bitchery on the internet afterwards about her appearance. I was touched by how solicitous and protective McConaughey appeared to be with her. She seemed so fragile.

Sidney Poitier certainly didn’t seem to be firing on all cylindres either, but got nothing of the criticism Kim did. Really not fair.

I was disappointed with how the whole thing was staged too.  I wish they had featured Vertigo a little bit and then brought Kim Novak out.  That’s really one of the all-time great female roles.  The reception would have been better, perhaps.  It’s a weird thing the plastic surgery.  Most of the crowd was probably horrified as their initial reactions, knowing they could look like that in 20 years (let’s face it, everyone there has procedures done).  Or maybe they weren’t?  Novak was very well received in Cannes.  I don’t know…probably stems with how she was introduced.  They should’ve done more, like had McConaughey speak about her.  The whole thing was effed up, and that’s besides the fact she was uncomfortable and then had to announce Frozen.

Having lived through the KIM NOVAK era, i can tell you all firsthand
that she got scathing reviews in just about every film she made
except possibly VERTIGO….even she couldnt ruin that film…The
problem is that just because a Hollywood Star lives to 80 or more
should not automatically mean a standing ovation…She never was
very good..she did get many plum parts based on her beauty
    and her timing…

because she had starred in Vertigo, which seems to be her only famous role, coincidentally in one of the best movies ever

Probably they thought: You didn’t make money, you don’t get a standing ovation.

I don’t know! There’s too much hypocresy (Is that how you write it?) in Hollywood. A lot of the attendants would kill for a role like Madeleine in Vertigo.

I can’t figure out why. Saying that, I feel like it had something to do with the catagory as well. Maybe if she had BP it would have happened.

She was actually one of the biggest box office stars in the mid 50s.

I cant speak for anyone else, but if it were me, and I saw her butchered face when once she was an ethereal beauty, I may have “sucked in my breathe in shock”, and then, the moment for an ovation would have passed.

Vinny brought up an interesting point – the category.  I was surprised Kim Novak was presenting animation categories.  I had expected Picture, Screenplay, Cinematography perhaps…..

Yeah. At Cannes she presented the Grand Jury Prix and got a standing ovation.

They gave her animation at the Oscars and as much as Will Smith seems like a nice guy, Kim should have presented best picture and Will should have presented animation with Matthew Mc (who I thought should have played it up that it was Kim Novak but just my opinion).
