What is it with movies based on video games and never having a smash critical hit among them?

According to Rotten Tomatoes, no movie based on a video game has ever broken the 60% threshold required to be listed as “fresh.” And on top of that, exactly two such movies have broken the 50% threshold: Resident Evil: Vendetta and Rampage.

    So… what is up?

I think there have been some good ones (specifically Rampage, Silent Hill, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, the new Tomb Raider) and I love Super mario Brothers and Need For Speed even though they’re pretty bad. Saying that, I agree on the rest. It seems like vide0 games are harder to adapt if they try too hard if that makes sense. Looking at the ones I like, I like them becuase they were just fun to watch. The ones that got sequels fell into the “they tried too hard catagory” for me.

The first Mortal Kombat was seen as great by many viewers, but remember, the technology we have now could definitely help.

If you watched the MKX storyline film on Youtube, you can see the influence the game has had on the Marvel films. MKX looked like a Marvel movie.

I’d actually love to see a reboot flick for Mortal Kombat. But with people with actual talent behind it.

I was entertained by Street Fighter, everyone seems to hate it. However, having seen some clips of it after all these years, it plays more corny than the semi-serious take I remember.

I remember watching a YouTube video from someone (I forget who) which was discussing this very topic. He thought that the reason why is because most video games have multiple paths and ways to play the game and is never the same no matter how many times you play it, the complete opposite of that of film, which is the exact same film in the same way every time you watch it and the trouble arises of trying to merge the two completely different forms of media.

The two most “cinematic” games I have seen are Uncharted or The Last of Us, which I think would be the best choices in adapting into film and the ones I think would be the easiest to adapt.

I believe there is process of those two games being adapted to film. A script was already written for an “Uncharted” movie and I think it was Tom Holland portraying a young Nathan Drake. As for “The Last of Us”, I think Josh Brolin and and Maisie Williams were being considered for the two lead parts, with the game’s original writer/director penning the script, and Sam Raimi helming the directorial role.

I am aware of both film adaptations being made. I am excited for both of them. I was just placing some examples of that.

I also know that there is an animated Super Mario movie getting made by Illumination Entertainment. I myself had a story idea for a Mario movie that I came up with in my teens that’s really good, and that I would love to do if I ever become a film director.

Mario would also be a great candidate for a film adaptation if done right. It is very appealing and well known and would make money hand over fist from fans young and old alike. I think a Zelda movie could do extremely well too, even though again, it has to be done carefully.

I think that they try to emulate the video game aesthetique and that sucks. It has to be in the cinematic language to be believable. I think a survival horror Resident Evil with “A Quiet Place” vibes would be pretty good.

I thought The Last of Us was already loosely adapted into a movie called Logan.

Would love them try to adapt Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons, To the Moon, or Shadow of the Colossus, but knowing Hollywood they would make it into some disrespectful af shit to the source material.
