Isn’t Bridge of Spies based upon a book of the same name? Why is it up for Best Original Screenplay?

I read an article somewhere that says Bridge is partly based on the book Strangers on a Bridge by James Donovan…

From what I remember, the book focuses its attentions mainly on the three prisoners, whereas the movie focuses on James Donovan (Tom Hanks). So I’m guessing during the arbitration process, the Writers Guild ruled the screenplay deviated from the book enough to qualify as original.

Yeah it’s more that Strangers on a Bridge gave them the idea because this actually happened but the earlier treatments were done primarily with interviews of the participants in the events rather than a traditional adaptation (say in the manner of Room).

There is no credited source. Research does not equal ‘based on’.

“Strangers on a Bridge” was a short story, but it is not officially credited as being the sole source material for Bridge of Spies.  Similarly, the rise of N.W.A. has been documented in various media, but Straight Outta Compton draws from various pieces and is also categorized as an original screenplay.

They need to combine these categories. It’s becoming ridiculous the factors that make a script orginial or adapted.

Also, if any other poster opened up this thread, people would say ” We already have 2 different threads for screenplay. Did you really have to ask it here?? That’s why Goldderby is the mess it is.”

Mark Harris had quite a smart idea on how to solve this screenplay category confusion a couple of years ago. He suggested having three categories; one for films based on historical fact, another for those based on published fictional material such as novels and plays (or previous films for that matter), and a third category for everything else, including sequels like Before Midnight. Sounds good to me. We already have 20 actors nominated each year, why not 15 screenplays?

These categories totally need to merge.  The distinction is useless if Whiplash, Before Midnight, Toy Story 3 and The Social Network are adapted, but Spotlight, Foxcatcher, Dallas Buyers Club and Zero Dark Thirty are original.

I’m also opposed to the idea of having so many acting categories, but in a way it’s necessary.(Maybe dividing them by their gender is not the best idea.)
Every film has one screenplay, one director, but how many pivotal characters/actors- 5,10? Minimum.
Having 3 categories for writing, really would diminish the prestige of a nomination. Cut it to 5 like every other category.
I understand that the argument behind the adapted vs original and that they are doing a completely different job; one has to create its own world while the other has to find the best way to transcribe it, but you could say that about every other category as well. Why are Bryan Cranston and Michael Fassbender who have portrayed the real life persons and practiced their roles by looking at those past videos, reading past documents etc. should compete against Matt Damon who’s created the character completely by himself? Even if you would say he’s the character of a book adaptation, what about Jennifer Jason Leigh? She’s competing against 3 real life person and one book character.
Or why did The Imitation Game’s production design team had to have to fight it out with The Grand Budapest Hotel?

The Martian was based on a novel so didn’t Damon base his one-note performance on that character in the book. Redmayne played a real life person as did Dicaprio it would be silly divide the screenplay in this way just as it would be silly to divide best actor in this way.

Yeah something has to be done here. Adding a third category would be pretty cool. Combining the two and having 10 nominees might be the most elegant (though you only get one winner). Either way, how original/adapted is distinguished is sort of a joke, currently.

Any movie based on a true story is adapted to me. You’re adapting a real story, not creating anything original. Sure the words they say are original but not the story beats. That’s why, though Spotlight is really well written, I want Inside Out to win. THAT was original. THAT was creative.

yes !… i truly wanna know why this movie is nominated best original screenplay ?… When i saw this picture, i found it very boring, althought i found Rylance very excellent, i don’t understand why it is so overrated ?… perhaps because of the Coen brothers, and Spielberg, they are so loved by the academy, but i think Quentin Tarantino should be nominated instead.

Well the Coens couldn’t get in with Unbroken so it’s not them being name checked. It was just a very weak year in this category with Joy underimpressing and The Hateful Eight dividing audiences
