I mean it’s probably the Best Comedy Film of the year. And all I see is that it’s on the 7th place based on your predictions.

Burnt has flopped really hard. Both critically and box office-wise. It’s definitely not a stronger contender.

Trumbo seem to be a very decent film. And probably that’s all. I can hardly even see Cranston making the cut for it.

Grandma is a nice actress-vehicle for Tomlin, but does not belong to the ‘comedy’ section, and I have a feeling that if the film is going to be rewarded, it’s going to be in the Best Actress category.

We don’t know much of The Big Short. Only the stars in it. And that’s barely enough for me to predict it right now.

I give you The Martian and Trainweck, but I also think that the latter’s awards chances are a bit overrated. Spy was more acclaimed, and did much better worldwide at the box office.

So why wouldn’t you predict Spy? McCarthy is a different case, I do understand that she can easily be snubbed, they don’t like her for some reason. But I don’t see why Spy wouldn’t make the cut, especially over some of these films.

I think Spy deserves major awards considertion, but I do agree that its not an awards player this season. It’s the Globes, though. I don’t see it winning the award unfortunately, but I would like to see it as a nominee (McCarthy too, Byrne too).

I guess so it did do well critically and commercially and with a HORRID comedy/musical catagory this year it could easily get into picture + Melissa

It all depends on what the HFP’s sensabilies are this year. They may go for Hangovers or easily go for Salmon Fishing in the Yemens. Grandma is most definitely a comedy more than a drama. Tomlin is hilarious in the movie and all her interactions along the way are great. Trumbo seems like a question mark at the moment but Burnt and Rock the Kasbah are definitely out. Spy does have a chance to get in but the Globes just seem to not enjoy McCarthy as an actress having 0 nominations in TV or Movie categories. I think Sisters is going to be the one to pull the carpet under its feet being a movie staring the hosts of the past 3 telecasts plus looking like a hilarious movie. They also might throw in a musical movie like Danny Collins, Ricki and the Flash, or even The Last Five Years for that matter. The Globes are just so unpredictable in terms of what they find humorous. These are the people that found The Tourist funny in a non ironic way.

If The Tourist can get nominations, don’t consider any “flop” to not make an impact at the Globes. I wouldn’t be surprised if Cooper wins for Burnt.

If this had a Devil Wears Prada type of reaction, then it would be different. McCarthy didn’t really create an iconic character like Meryl Streep did with Miranda Priestly, (then again she isn’t Meryl).

Well “Spy” is acclaimed as well, but it’s more like a Hollywood parody than a significant awards contender. McCarthy should win the Golden Globe in a catewalk. Unfortunately this category is about rewarding drama contenders because there aren’t enough places for them in the drama categories.

Globes voters might just be immune to Melissa McCarthy herself. Nada for “The Bridesmaids” (pretty nutty that she’s an Oscar nominee for this role and not a Globes one), “St. Vincent” (nodded in Best Comedy or Musical and for beloved Bill Murray), “The Heat” (including comedy titan Sandra Bullock), “Tammy” (this one was a dud, so good that it missed out), and “Identity Thief” (broad performance; Jason Bateman). She couldn’t even get an afterglow nod after winning the Emmy for “Mike & Molly,” though that’s probably more of their CBS aversion than McCarthy specifically. No reason to think that “Spy” is going to turn out any differently for her until it happens. There are always other contenders, and sometimes these voters like to do dramedic instead of all out funny with their nods. She might even struggle next with an established brand like “Ghostbusters.”

It’s a great point that Globe voters have never nominated Melissa McCarthy. She wins an Emmy for Mike & Molly, she’s double-nominated at Emmys for Mike & Molly, plus SNL. She gets a SAG and Oscar nom for Bridesmaids. Her film, St. Vincent, and her leading man, Bill Murray, get in while she doesn’t. Seriously, what gives?

How the Globe category for Actress in a Com/Mus should look:
    – Blythe Danner, I’ll See You In My Dreams
    – Melissa McCarthy, Spy
    – Amy Schumer, Trainwreck
    – Maggie Smith, The Lady in the Van
    – Lily Tomlin, Grandma

    How it will look:
    – Sandra Bullock, Our Brand is Crisis
    – Amy Schumer, Trainwreck
    – Meryl Streep, Ricki and the Flash
    – Lily Tomlin, Grandma
    – Kate Winslet, The Dressmaker

The film itself didn’t take off in the way Bridesmaids did. And neither has McCarthy’s performance with the masses. If she couldn’t get in for her role in Bridesmaids, I can’t see it happening for Spy. Especially when there are quite a few strong performances in contention this year.

Maybe if Schumer wasn’t in, then she would stand a better chance. Even then, I feel the odds would be against her.

She beats them all in the comedy field. But I do understand all of your points. About McCarthy. But “Spy” as a Comedy/Musical contender is way stronger that a 7th. And my original post is about that, not about McCarthy’s chances.

Yeah, the film itself is an interesting one. In terms of an actual comedy or musical film, there is that and Trainwreck. The other top contenders could, from what I’ve seen, have a case made for drama. But then it is seen as being easier to win musical/comedy at the globes. Also, if you did stick to thoroughbred comedies, the field would either be generally weak, or even lacking in nominees. It is because of the campaigns of films like the action, with a few laughs, The Martian, and drama/comedy with music Ricki & The Flash that Spy isn’t expected to land here.

I loved Miranda Hart as well. For me, Rose Byrne was the scene-stealing MVP, but Hart really brought something special to her “best friend” role.

Seems like every year there is a Melissa McCarthy film and every year it gets snubbed.

That is because The Heat was fun, but not awards-worthy in any sense. There were far better comedies in 2013. Identity Thief was regarded as a disaster, and Tammy caused even the most die-hard McCarthy fans to call it quits. Until Spy brought her back some much-needed credibility from movie-going audiences. She was just okay in St. Vincent, but nothing to cry home about, if you know what I mean. Bridesmaids would be her only real snub, and even that is questionable seeing as how since then she’s been playing a progressively more loud and obnoxious version of that character since then, in The Heat, where she was still likeable, and Identity Thief sucked and TAMMY SUCKED WAY HARDER. I myself voted for Melissa at the Razzies for Worst Actress for Tammy! But Spy was, as I said, a comeback so for now let’s see if she sticks to being in roles that aren’t obnoxious and terrible. Before we starts saying she’s the best again, at least!
