I just saw The Big Short last night and I loved it I thought it had an amazing script and really sublime acting. I thought Carell was easily the best actor. So why are the editors on here predicting Matt Damon to win the cateory for best comedy actor in film instead of Carell. Damon was funny in the Martian but it was one note and had no range. Carell has range in The Big Short when he acts crazy and mad over wall street. Can Carell still win the Globe?

That is possible, but I still think HFPA will choose the easy route and go with a person that has best shot at getting nominated at the Oscars in lead category, and that is Matt Damon. I would have thought differently had only one Big Short men were nominated, but with this situation; they will probably can’t decide between those two. The fans don’t have a consensus either. Some say it was Carrell’s film, the others claim Bale was the MVP, there are people who’ve found Gosling good… Bale seems like he has everything going for him but being campaigned as Supporting in the Oscar race, won’t do him any favor.

Matt Damon will probably win this for the more popular movie. It makes no sense for him or the film to be nominated here, but he’ll win just like Robert Downey Jr won because he was in sort of a comedy, super popular hadn’t won a movie Globe yet and the closest and most obvious winner (like Carrell) didn’t win because the film wasn’t as popular and a bigger star was right there waiting. And that person was….Matt Damon (The Informant).

Why does Carrell have a 40/1 and is in last place in the prediction center? I would consider him co-frontrunner with Damon.

Carell faces vote-splitting with Christian Bale and the Globes “need” to award The Martian somewhere since they loved it so much that they nominated it for director (and I have The Big Short winning comedy).  The experts ranking Carell last is ridiculous—behind Danny Collins and Infinitely Polar Bear!

It’s interesting becaues I’m predicting Christian Bale! (: I think they are both great but I think acting-wise Bale has the more technically challenging role and he moved me more. I could be happy with Bale, Carell or Damon winning, but I honestly think Bale is the best of the three. Mark Ruffalo should be in fifth place, Al Pacino in 3rd. My guess is that Carell will place 3rd, with a toss-up for 1st and 2nd. They (Bale and Carell) could cancel each other out, which would mean a Damon victory, which would be fine with me, but I would vote for Bale.

I think Matt Damon basically because The Martian is very much in the awards-radar for now and they have not awarded him yet.

I actually have Bale higher than Carrell at this spot. I’m kinda surprised Carrell is last though in the predictions center.

Well I think he really can make it. They both got nominations and didn’t cancel each other so I think Carell has a shot. Also I think he is like Amy Adams in AH. If he wil win at Globes and BFCA and get BAFTA nom he easly get his very devered second Oscar nomination.

How, if his first one was one of the worst in Oscar history?

And why do we have like a million threads of Steve Carell now? There is the Best Actor topic where you can discuss his non-existent chances.

I’d love it if Carell can get in. He was far better than he was in Foxcatcher and better than some of the frontrunners for a nomination.

Hmm, I doubt Carell gets a BAFTA nom to be honest. He got in for Foxcatcher but only in the supporting category, and I’m not sure BAFTA will go for The Big Short in as big a way as the US groups. Christian Bale could factor in there, though. I am, however, tentatively predicting Carell for an Oscar nom, due to the perceived strength and popularity of the film as well as some reviewers who say he’s better than he was in Foxcatcher.

Because there’s some bizarre consensus on this forum that The Martian is some sort of major awards contender.

That category was god-awful to begin with though, as Bill Murray and Bradley Cooper was this close to score a nomination for their real flops. So we should actually question how an A-listed movie star like Gosling missed a nom. here for the sake of Pacino and Ruffalo instead of appreciating movie’s double nominations.

    Johnny Depp
    Joaquin Phoenix
    Ryan Gosling
    Meryl Streep
    Emily Blunt

The Globes used to nominate these people for anything and everything.  Along with snubbing Angelina Jolie last year, I do not know what is going on with them.  Suffice it to say that I did extremely poorly in my Golden Globe predictions.
