I loved Slumdog Millionaire and I always questioned why the SAG awards nominated him in Supporting when Dev’s character Jamal Malik was THE MAIN CHARACTER. That always baffled me. I do understand it for Lion, though.

I would’ve put Dev in lead and put Maddhur Mittal (who was terrific in Slumdog Millionaire) in Supporting.

He was only a third of the main character.

A third? Yeah there was Latika and Salim but he was the guy who was in the game show.

No, he meant that Dev Patel was one of three actors portraying the main character, not that Latika and Salim were main characters.

Dev Patel, Ayush Makesh Khedekar, and Tanay Chheda all three portrayed Jamal Malik. Patel had the most screentime of the three actors playing the role, but that was the reason he went supporting.

Well that and to commit category fraud in the hopes of a nomination versus trying in a stacked Best Actor field.

    Hmmm.

Alex Rafalowicz, Noah Taylor, and Geoffrey Rush all three portrayed David Helfgott in Shine. Rush won Best Actor.

When he first sits down at that diner and plays Flight of the Bumblebee, he had me.
Anyone, who can play Rachmaninoff like him, during his concert scenes, deserves the Oscar.
But yes, there is a double standard here, albeit a more subtle one.
I suppose, Supporting is where they felt Dev had the better chance (which was zero anyways, imo).

The unfortunate thing is that putting him in supporting meant it was impossible to do a campaign for the deserving supporting actor, Anil Kapoor.

Irrfan Kahn donated his salary (half a mil…nice, Danny boy) to help the kids. It didn’t appear to help one of the little girls down the road, however, who was sold by her parents so they could eat.

I’ve adored Irrfan ever since, and he was no slouch before.

Yes; this film has always raised my ire and angst considerably.

Young, unknown, nonwhite, the SAG placement, and as previously mentioned, being the older version of the main character with divided screentime also influenced the decision. If it had been more evenly divided, maybe things would have changed for Dev Patel, but even in that scenario, you need to be a “name” first (Winslet/Stuart; Dench/Winslet). I thought Patel was great in “Slumdog Millionaire.” I would have nodded him over Robert Downey, Jr. in a heartbeat.

Downey Jr’s nomination was the most inspired from the Academy that year.

Hardly. That year was a lackluster crop of nominees in numerous respects, and “Tropic Thunder” wasn’t even the worst offender.

Patel had more of a chance in Supporting? In a year where Heath Ledger was set in stone? Bad strategy there.

I think they meant more chance for a nomination, not a win. Not that it worked out anyway.
