Reese Witherspoon stars in Jean-Marc Vallée’s follow-up to Dallas Buyers Club. Titled Wild, it is an adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s memoir. It is a chronicle of one woman’s 1,100-mile solo hike undertaken as a way to recover from a recent catastrophe.

Laura Dern co-stars as Strayed’s mother.

The screenplay is by Nick Hornby, who was nominated for the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for An Education.

If Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern receive nominations and even win for this film, I think we could see Jean-Marc Vallee become the new preferred director of actors among the Academy, surpassing David O. Russell.

    He’ll
need a director nomination first. I think it’s possible, especially
since he seems like he picks new actors with each film unlike Russell
who mainly uses the same repertoire of actors, often risking miscasting
    to do so.

This just might end up as an acclaimed vehicle for Reese. Barring bad to middling reviews, this could put her in the running for another Oscar. Lol.

I’ve seen most of JMV’s other films and seeing as how he’s Canadian as well, I cant help but root for him.

From what I gather, Laura Dern is playing Reese Witherspoon’s dead mother in flashbacks only, so unfortunately I think her role will be quite minor. But i’m interested nonetheless to see if this film will be any good.

Has anybody read the book? It sounds like nothing happens. Is it just a movie about a woman who goes on a hike?

But yay for Vallee getting attention. Been a fan of his for a while, and if this is good he could become the new David O. Russell.

This could be an Oscar hopeful. Something tells me that with Witherspoon’s upcoming slate of films, she’s looking to recapture her former Oscar glory. She not only has a biopic (Wild) but a “white savior” movie (The Good Lie), a film by a prestigious director (Inherent Vice), and is even producing another Oscar hopeful (Gone Girl). She could be having a “McConaissance” of her own.

and not coincidentally, her husband Jim Toth is the agent of: McConaughey, Leto, Vallee, etc. The trailer looks absolutely fantastic. I wasn’t looking forward to this film (sounded like a chore), but I am now.

Looks amazing. I’m pretty sure she’ll be a contender.

Looks like the female version of “Into the Wild”. Meh.

I’d love to see Reese make a comeback with this.  I’ve always thought she was a wonderful actress, and it’s a shame she’s kind of disappeared after her Oscar win.  And the trailer looks very good!

Saw this last night and it’s a total showcase for Reese. She in
every scene. It’s kind of a female ‘127 Hours’ only without the drama or
    flashy direction.

She’s great but it doesn’t have any real moments that would propel her
to a win. It’s a bit too slow to be a big hit and the
flashback timeline is a bit confusing which doesn’t help.

Not sure Laura Dern has enough to do to warrant a nom although Supporting Actress is looking at bit thin at the moment.
