CANNES: Jessica Lange, Sarah Jessica Parker Joining Shirley Maclaine in ‘Wild Oats’
Jessica Lange and Sarah Jessica Parker will star opposite Shirley Maclaine and Alan Arkin in the road-trip comedy “Wild Oats,” sources said. The Exchange will be selling “Wild Oats” at Cannes. Producers are Blythe Frank of Wild Pictures and Kip Konwiser of the Konwiser Brothers. Stealth Media Group is exec producing.
The project has been in development for several years with The Weinstein Co. acquiring U.S. distribution rights in 2012. At that point, Jacki Weaver was attached along with MacLaine. Andy Tennant, whose credits include “Hitch” and “Sweet Home Alabama,” is directing from a script by Claudia Myers and Gary Kanew.
Maclaine portrays a widow and retired history teacher who receives a life insurance check accidentally made out for $5 million instead of the expected $50,000. Her best friend, portrayed by Lange, urges her to deposit the money and escape their small town life to the Canary Islands.May 13, 2014 at 6:15 pm #153779
Lange doesn’t have a good track record with the Weinsteins. They screwed over a perfectly suitable Oscar nomination for the shelved and awful Christina Ricci movie Prozac Nation. Lange was the only worthy thing about that chore of a movie to sit through.May 13, 2014 at 6:23 pm #153780
I didn’t realize that. This film seems very interesting to me because it will be most notable comedy project that Lange has tackled since “Tootsie” in 1982 (32 yrs. ago). Lange and MacLaine have also never worked with each other, so hopefully this will become quite the little gem!May 14, 2014 at 4:44 pm #153781
This movie seems “blah” to me. I gotta see a trailer though to decide if I would see itMay 14, 2014 at 5:02 pm #153782
I seriously doubt a film directed by Andy Tennant is going to have any Oscar contenders. He’s an efficient, light-weight, personality-deficient director who makes mildly entertaining but very forgettable films.May 14, 2014 at 8:09 pm #153783

I’ll watch just about anything with Shirley in it. And Arkin too, Andy Tennant has made imo a couple of horrible films, namely the gawd awful Bounty Hunter and the disappointing Fool’s Gold, but he has also directed one of my favorites, Ever After. His TV work well, I watched The Amy Fisher Story and that’s it.
He aims to entertain and could get lucky with the Academy this time, with this kind of cast. I guess we’ll see. Still, I’m not sure I’d hold my breathe over that.June 9, 2014 at 7:25 pm #153784
Kenneth Lonergan has a new script and a hot cast but he is not directing. Andy Tennant is listed as the director of “Wild Oats,” set to go next month. What a cast, too: I’m told Sarah Jessica Parker, Donald Sutherland, Shirley MacLaine, and Jessica Lange are all on board. I do believe that’s three Oscar winners. If Donald Sutherland doesn’t have an Oscar just pretend he does. He should have had one a long time ago. Alan Arkin was previously attached.
The story revolves around MacLaine and Lange. They accidentally receive a $5 million social security check that has too many zero’s– it’s supposed to be $50,000. They take off on a grand adventure that takes them to the Canary Islands.
Lonergan and Tennant aren’t two names often written in the same sentence. On the imdb first timers Gary Kanew and Claudia Myers are listed as the writers. My guess is SJP brought close family pal Lonergan in to polish things up. That’s a good idea because Tennant makes commercial films like “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Hitch.” A Lonergan rewrite could only help him get a better movie.
Bob and Harvey Weinstein, and Michael Mailer are listed among a crowd of producers.June 11, 2014 at 10:11 pm #153785
Jessica Lange, Shirley MacClaine and Judd Hirsch are also on board, with Andy Tennant directing.
Story follows a woman who receives an unexpected windfall check from a computer glitch and goes on the run from the law.
Moore was last seen in “Very Good Girls.”June 12, 2014 at 7:42 am #153786

I know for sure I’m gonna really like this movie. Plotwise it reminds me about another Lange movie “Bonneville”. I might be the only person in the whole universe who loved it. Yes, it was schmaltzy cheesefest but I don’t care. I like road trip movies with older ladies.
