I was looking at the Best Picture race this year, and I see that there are so many Biopics in contention this year, that I’m having trouble imagining anything but a biopic winning. By Biopic, I refer to a movie that focuses on the true story of an individual, not necessarily their entire life (I know other people have other definitions of it, that’s how I’m using it). In recent years, when there are more biopics in contention then the academy is more inclined to reward them. Since the expanded field came in:

2009: 1 Biopic nominated, Hurt Locker wins
    2010: 4 Biopics nominated, King’s Speech wins
2011: 1 Biopic nominated, The Artist wins
2012: 3 Biopics nominated, Argo wins
    2013: 6 Biopics nominated, 12 Years a Slave wins

In the years where more than one biopic is nominated, a biopic won. This year, we have Unbroken, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, American Sniper, Selma, Mr. Turner, Wild, Foxcatcher, Big Eyes, and Rosewater.

Which biopic do you think has the best chance at winning, and do you think anything else has a chance at winning?

The best chance probably is either Foxcatcher or American Sniper but I would love to see “Big Eyes” do well too.

Unbroken has the best chance of winning. The Imitation Game is another strong contender. I’d say Best Picture is between those two films, Boyhood, and Birdman.

I don’t know if a biopic will win Best Picture this year, but if Keaton, Moore, Simmons and Arquette take the acting categories (a very possible scenario) then it will be the first time since 1998 that none of the acting winners won for playing a real-life character.

Wow, I didn’t notice that, but it’s an interesting statistic. It would also happen if Norton and/or Stone win in the supporting races, which are my #2s in those categories.

Between made-for-Oscar “Unbroken,” Weinstein horse “The Imitation Game,” and acclaimed-from-AFI + socially-important “Selma,” I definitely see a biopic winning this year.

The Blind Side in 2009 was biographical.

I’m still predicting Boyhood for the win, which would be sweet justice as it feels more ‘real-life’ than almost any biopic could be.
