With the announcement that Alicia Vikander will go into Lead Actress-Drama for The Danish Girl, this has me curious as whether or not she will end up like Scarlett Johansson, who got snubbed back in 2003 for Best Actress. Johansson was competing against herself for both Girl With A Pearl Earring and Lost in Translation and some circles had her in Supporting for LiT. So she likely missed out due to a vote split/category confusion and if some circles have Vikander in Lead for TDG with others in Supporting, will she suffer a similar fate as Scarlett Johansson did? Since Vikander is still in Supporting for Ex Machina, should she just gear her focus on that performance to avoid a possible vote split? (I’d do that if I were her as a potential safety net) It is worth noting that SPC already sent out screeners for Testament of Youth where she is pushed in Lead.
I don’t think Testament will be any issue. It’s a fine movie where she shines the brightest but from just the clips I’ve seen she looks better in Danish Girl. I just don’t see that movie being priority viewing for Academy members unless they are big Game of Thrones fans and want to see Kit Harington
“Alicia Vikander” will be this season’s “Felicity Jones” thats for sure.
Testament of Youth, Ex Machina, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Burnt are not going anywhere, so she is not going to be brought down by any internal competition. The only thing that she has to worry about is her votes for The Danish Girl being split between lead and supporting.
