Last year the Dolby Theatre audience gave standing ovations to all four of the top winners – “Argo,” Ang Lee, Daniel Day-Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence.

Do you expect any of this year’s winners to be greeted with a standing ovation?

Perhaps if “12 Years a Slave” wins Best Picture and when Alfonso Cuaron wins Best Director?

How likely is the audience to stand up for Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett?

I think we can see standing ovations if DiCaprio wins, Blanchett wins, Dench wins, Adams wins, Roberts wins, Lawrence wins, Ejiofor wins, and Leto wins.

Abdi, Nyong’o because they are breakout performers… a la Octavia Spencer

    Dern would
Blanchett will due to her performance  (ala Sean Penn in Milk)
I feel Cuaron will due to his likability and his achievement
    12 years of course would
    Lupita might, Lawrence would not

McConaughey is a toss up for me, he may because of his career resurgence but it all depends on how liked he is overall I suppose. So I don’t have an answer for you there.

“Blanchett (not huggable enough, too political)”

Huh? Debra Messing found the belly huggable

    “Probable: McConaughey, Leto”
Honestly, the least probable out of all likely winners. Cuaron is likely to get a standin o if he wins director.

How is Blanchett’s performance anything like Penn’s in Milk? Penn’s role was political, Blanchett’s role is 100% unlikable. Blanchett won’t receive a standing ovation anyway regardless…

They stood for JL because she tripped, fell and then got up unscathed.

So anyone who does the same this Sunday will get the Standing O’.

I’m pretty sure that by ‘because of the performance’ Colin didn’t mean the character’s nature, but the actual strength of the performance.

I seem to recall Best Actors more often get standing ovations than Best Actresses. The year Anthony Hopkins won, he got a standing ovation. Then they called Jodie Foster’s name, while walking to the stage she looked out over the audience and seemed a little annoyed she didn’t get a standing ovation, too.

If McConaughey wins (and I don’t think he will), he will at least get a standing ovation from True Detective’s fanatical fanbase (which includes loads of celebrities, film directors and Oscar winners – check out Twitter)!

They gave standing ovations so easily these days so maybe most of the winners of the big categories(Picture, director, the acting categories) would receive one.
Bale,Hawkins,Fassbender,Hill,Cooper are probably the only ones that wouldn’t receive anything if they win,the rest of the nominees all have some kinds of stuffs to salute for.
Cate,Judi,Meryl,Dicaprio(ew),Roberts,Dern,Squibb,Scoresese are all the respectful ones,as they are all either veterans or multi-nominated.
Amy is the trickier one,she has received many nominations but sadly people tend to forget about her.
Lawrence is certainly gonna receive one if she wins,as she’s made a (notorious) history.
Nyong’o and Abdi are the newcomers, the “blank canvas”.
McConaughey could have one,as he has made a successful turn in his career.
Leto could have one as well, for the whole actor>singer>actor story, and he played an AIDS victim.
Mcqueen would definitely have one if he wins,I guess nobody would argue with that. That’s an even bigger history event.

Cate Blanchett should get one. Can someone remind me why she seems “unhuggable” and “political”? She may be professional and classy, but she seems like a genuinely down to earth person.
