I don’t use the website Tumblr.com as I don’t really understand it, but my niece (who knows that I study and write about film and the Oscars) recently emailed me a link to a page on the website with the words “leonardo dicaprio oscar” in the search bar, and below it are posts from multiple people that all complain about how Leonardo DiCaprio has yet to win an Oscar. These posts all have a lot of “notes” which is according to my niece is a good thing.

    Some of these posts say:

When Leonardo DiCaprio finally wins his Oscar, I want tumblr to have a huge celebration. I want my dashboard to be spammed! I want a Leonapocalypse!”

wouldn’t it be ironic if there was an autobiographical film of leonardo dicaprio’s life and the actor playing leonardo dicaprio won an oscar”

i feel like tumblr cares more about Leonardo DiCaprio winning an oscar than he does”

“My best friend and I have decided that we will kill someone every year that Leo doesn’t win an Oscar”

You can view more here: http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/leonardo+dicaprio+oscar

The last time I can remember such widespread anger over somebody being Oscarless is Martin Scorsese and maybe Kate Winslet.

I know he has both haters and lovers on this board, but do you think that this amount of popular support for Leo to win could help push him over the edge, or is the academy just too out of touch?

    LOL Tumblr.

The internet has no say in this regard (and many others).

Ah, yes. The one with him put into The Fairly OddParents screenshot is a personal fave.

Will it help? I doubt it. I feel like the Academy likely isn’t in tune with the voices of Tumblr, in partcular. There’s certainly a possibility that a sentiment could build among members that he’s overdue, but I think it would have to come through a different source.

Internet anger sure hasn’t helped Christopher Nolan.

Didn’t help Christopher Nolan TO win, and didn’t stop Sandra Bullock FROM winning, so… No.

I know I’m the only one, but I am so sick and tired of hearing people cry over the fact that Leo doesn’t have an Oscar. Don’t get me wrong, I like him, but to me he has done nothing Oscar winning in his career. He comes off as very hammy in a lot of his films.

Leo has deserved it before but others have simply deserved it more. When it’s his time, it’ll be his time. The world has already accepted that he’s overdue regardless of what Tumblr (lol) thinks. When the role comes, it’ll be as automatic as Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Jeff Bridges, Natalie Portman and others. He’ll have zero problems getting there and if The Wolf of Wall Street is that role, then so be it. He’ll have the easiest of times when that time comes. There will be zero suspense.

I wish that Scorsese and DiCaprio would stop working together.

Baz Luhrmann (with TGG), Christopher Nolan and James Cameron directed better DiCaprio performances than anything Scorsese has done with him, and Scorsese’s best film since Goodfellas was one that DiC didn’t appear in (being Hugo). I don’t think they jinx each other (The Departed is good), but the pairing is pretty boring.

I kind of agree… I do think DiCaprio was amazing in both ‘The Aviator’ and ‘The Departed’ though. But it seems like it’s going stale. Maybe ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ will prove me wrong.

Why DiCaprio and not, say, Brad Pitt?

    Seriously.

Both good actors, I’d give the edge on films overall to Pitt as well as range of performances, although DiCaprio for me has been great twice (Titanic and Catch Me If You Can).

The key to the Leo passion is the combination of Titanic, Scorsese and Nolan fans all converging on one actor. The explains it.
