Please see the recent Gold Derby blog item about the 2013 acting
nominees and which ones might be invited to join the Academy this year.

    http://www.goldderby.com/news/6209/oscars-lupita-nyongo-michael-fassbender-movies-news-13579086.html

My sense is that Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins and June
Squibb will all easily get invitations.

But I’m curious about the chances of Lupita Nyong’o and Barkhad
    Abdi.

My guess is that Nyong’o gets in, but that Abdi does not.

How do you feel about actors with only one or two film credits becoming
Academy members? Is a single Oscar-winning or Oscar-nominated performance enough
    to merit lifetime Academy membership?

Personally, I think winning one Oscar should be enough to merit lifetime membership but being nominated once does not.

An invitation would help Barkhad considerably.

Mostly however, I’m indifferent. One nom, two noms,  no noms, a win. Ideally the individuals’ contributions to filmdom should matter.

Will they get an invite? Lupita likely will. It would be a bigger surprise is she doesnt.

    I agree.

It would be pretty scandalous not to invite Lupita Nyong’o. Barkhad Abdi, on the other hand, might have a harder time of it. I hope that he makes it in on his first try. If not, I’m sure he can get some Academy members to vouch for him in the future (Apatow, Greengrass, HANKS, etc.).

It’s impressive that Catalina Sandino Moreno got invited right after she was nominated for her film debut. Barkhad Abdi should be able to achieve this too.

Since she actually won, Nyong’o will certainly be invited (despite her lack of film credits). Abdi will not be invited most likely (except Tom Hanks is on the Board of Governors and helps choose the acting invitations, so that might help a lot).

I thought getting a nomination automatically gets you in.  Didn’t it used to be like that?

They tightened up admissions a good bit about 10 years ago. A nomination no longer is an automatic invitation. We haven’t seen a winner snubbed yet, though.

Michelle Williams took quite a lot of time to get a nomination.
Rinko Kikuchi and Abigail Breslin are still waiting to be invited, arent they?
I think that academy are open it to people from different ethnics, so i can se both of them being invited.
