Daniel just did a great writeup on this — do you agree with its assumptions?

I think last year proved that doesn’t really apply with the Oscars. McConaughey and Leto are well loved and DiCaprio, Bale, Cooper, and Fassbender all have their fair share of fans when it comes to looks. So I don’t think looks are really a factor here.

While it’s true that there is a bias that prevents people from taking younger actors as seriously as more established ones, reviews for Redmayne in particular compared his performance to Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot — who was exactly the same age as Redmayne is now when he won 25 years ago (and Eddie would actually be a year older if he were to win).

Could someone define “stud” for me? I’m British. Sorry. I understand the term to apply to very handsome men with great bodies… under 45.

Now these three are definitely under 45, however I don’t believe any of the three qualify as either handsome or hunky.

I’m sure they are all fine actors, but I would be hard put to find actresses with equivalent looks actually getting work.

I think the theory is less about good looks, and more about age. Attractiveness isn’t quantifiable, where age is, as shown by this article. I think there definitely is a bias against young men, and it’s going to apply this year as it seems to every year. They are always more inclined to reward someone with a long career than they are to reward a young actor who hasn’t proved himself yet, and needs to show that they are a star. Looking at Brody, it actually proved true that he didn’t become the big star that the Oscar would suggest. I don’t honestly believe that McConaughey would have won last year if he hadn’t been around a couple decades, and clearly taking his career in the right direction with a string of excellent performances in critically acclaimed films.

And I know there are people who are bringing up Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot as a comparison for Redmayne. The level of acting that Day-Lewis showed in that film was immune to all theories. It was incredible, and among the best performances that I’ve ever seen. If Redmayne is as good as him, then he can and should win, regardless of his age or looks.

Really, Tom? These are the guys you call ‘studs’? Really? REALLY? Redmayne is as asexual as they come. Just one look at Teller makes my pussy dry up and O’Connell is just vomit-inducing.

Brad Pitt is hot. Jude Law is hot. Leonardo DiCaprio is hot (for some). But those guys you mentioned aren’t hot, never were and never will. As proved by Adrien Brody, you can still win Oscar while young but only if you’re far from hot.

Sasha, obviously our ideas of hot male studdom and Tom’s are at variance.

I’m sure there are hundreds of brilliant young actresses out there who could become leading ladies if only the looks bar were lowered to the extent it is with these three. Good for them to get leading roles, but all three are as plain as an old boot!

Unattractive leading men: I aim to make this a feminist issue.

Exactly. If woman wants to be leading lady she needs to be hot as fuck. But guys can be ugly as sin and still get leading roles. So much sexism it makes me sick to my stomach. Women have always had harder in every part of life and it will never change.

Yes! Enough of these ordinary, boring looking guys. Look, an actor can be gorgeous AND act (Day Lewis, McConaughey, Fassbender, Hardy, etc.). We want more of them. Why isn’t Lena Dunham (well, possibly not her personally but her physical equivalent) starring in 3 Oscar-bait movies this year? There is no room in my fantasising about movie stars for Teller, Redmayne and O’Connell.

All women should start – like men – refusing to go to see a movie because the actor doesn’t give us a lady boner!

Nessie and Sash, fellow intelligent bitches!

Looks matter everywhere, including the courtrooms. Especially for we women.

    Oh Christ.

I hope you’re not for real. Applying the same narrow rules of physical attractiveness on male actors as some men do on females will not resolve any issues of sexism. In fact, it will exacerbate the problem, giving men even more of an “excuse” to continue unfairly objectifying women. Female vengeance is not feminism.

Sorry if you think I’m being overly earnest/literal, but this kind of two-wrongs-make-a-right attitude concerns me.

I happen to think Redmayne is incredibly handsome (unconventional, yes, but in a transfixing way). Then again, people find Benedict Cumberbatch attractive and he looks like the Loch Ness Monster to me.
