With a jaw-dropping weekend gross of $56 million and a stellar 89 on Rotten Tomatoes, this movie should be in the mix, right? With a $28 million budget, it won’t be eligible for the Indie Spirits.

Do you think it will reap bids from any major awards?

I think it could do well mainly because this is the year of Universal, which I think will expand into award season. It could perform well at the Golden Globes because it will likely be placed in the comedy/musical categories. As for Oscars, I can see it getting anywhere from 0-6 nominations. I already posted this in the film’s thread, but these are the nominations I could see it getting in order of likelyhood.

    • Soundmixing- music oriented films have an easier time making it into this category
    • Picture- I can see this falling into a similar situation as Selma, where picture may be an easier get than other nominations
    • Supporting actor- Jason Mitchell or Paul Giamatti- To me, Jason Mitchell had the best performance in the film as Eazy-E (followed closely behind by Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre). He also has the mosic Oscar-y scene in the film. The problem is that he’s a virtual unknown. Paul Giamatti gives a good performance as the manager Jerry and he’s the only big name actor in the cast, which is why I write him as a possibility.
    • Director- F. Gary Gray showed some confident directing skills and would be very deserving of a nomination. The acadmy may also be seeking to make up for the absence of Ava DuVernay
    • Cinematography- Some great, non obvious, camera work that might be overlooked.
    • Editing- This is a tricky one. The last third of the film drags a bit, but the first two thirds flows so smoothly, which rarely happens with me when it comes to music biopics.

Took the words straight outta my mouth, although I am skeptical about MTV since this is coming so early in the eligibility period and it does not have hot young stars anchoring it.

It deserves the recognition, but I’d bet every penny of the Rothschild fortune Straight Outta Compton is left-out come time for the GG, SAG, CC and Oscar nominations.

    I hope so.

That combination of fairly good reviews and it’s box office is very hard to ignore. It should turn up in multiple places during the Awards circuit. I am feeling optimistic about its’ chances. The length of the film flew by at incredible speed.

Still, it’s hard to envision older, caucasian voters going for this in any category. It’s like Crash inyourface with more violence and gutteral language. (Bring it on) Also, there’s some striking misogyny going on here. Not surprising for the culture, but very off-putting for some of us.

Is historical accuracy important? You bet it is.

So happy to see this doing very well and that it was made in the first place.

    Writing. WGA. Keep it eligible.

Good editing, but I dunno. Probably not, which hurts its chances for a BP nod, along with the probable omission of a BD nom.

SAG: great perfs from the cast.

I LOVE the film. I think it’s really, really solid filmmaking–specifically on the part of F. Gary Gray’s meticulous direction and keeping the scope of the film narrow, respectful and evenly distributed to the three main characters.

While I don’t think its impact will make its way up to Oscar (though personally I think it should contend), I can see LA Film and Gotham giving it some love in mulitple categories.

Indie Spirit’s will not because it’s budget was out of the range of consideration. They could give it a special prize though like they did for ‘Foxcatcher’.

Or they could nominate it anyway, like Silver Linings Playbook and 12 Years a Slave.  Sigh.

Straight Outta Compton is performing really strong so far. SAG, PGA, WGA, AFI. Surprised it didn’t make it into the Globes, but its guild performance is a story being shockingly ignored this awards season

It’s being ignored because it is a film many people have actually seen and because of its subject matter.
