The Martian has opened up to commercial and critical success. Can it do well at the oscars or will it be forgotten?

I think so. Usually, mainstream contenders have to have the whole trifecta: critical praise, b.o. success, and industry/guild support. If it can achieve the latter, like it has the first two, then yeah, definitely. It should certainly do better than, say, Black Mass which has mixed reviews, modest-to-mediocre box office, and an irredeemable main character.

    The Martian

Picture, Film Editing, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Visual effects, Production Design. On the edge for Actor Damon and director Scott. I’m saying no screenplay

    I really don’t get it.

    RocketMan is a better movie.

To be fair, I LOVE RocketMan, but y’all get my drift.

It was pretty great, I really enjoyed it, but I’m still keeping my expectations low. I think that it will lose momentum after all the other big movies have their releases. Maybe if it holds number 1 against Bridge of Spies. That will certainly get some major attention.

I am HOPING it gets major nominations. I didn’t even think I would like this movie, I’m not usually a big fan of big budget special effects movies, but this one soars. So I am hoping it will get nominations for Picture, Director, Actor, Adapted Screenplay – and expecting nominations for Cinematography, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Film Editing, and Visual Effects…

I really hope Matt Damon makes it, esp. instead of Depp…

I have watched it twice already, and i don’t see how The Martian will not get a considerable number of first place votes on the preferential ballot.

It’s an extremely well made, mainstream crowd pleaser by Ridley Scott, with a knock-out screenplay, and a very unique approach to the film (combining the disco score elements for a cool, hip vibe), yet coupled with a heartfelt performance by the protagonist. I say it is definitely getting a Best Picture nomination. The producers block of the Academy alone will ensure that. It stands a great chance to land Adapted Screenplay, Production Design, Best Visual Effects and Best Editing, Sound Mixing nominations. Matt Damon i am not predicting, but he could seriously be the passion pick of this year.

Maybe because it is a competently made blockbuster, and no one is calling it the best movie of the year.

Stranger things have happened on nomination morning. If Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close can get in.

Well, it won’t surprise. It’s definitely in contention now. Does it deserve to win? No. Will it? No. It will get below-the-line love for sure.

    I don’t think so, honestly.

I believe however “The Martian” will almost swept all the technical awards… especially Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design.

Maybe a PGA nom. But BP probably not. Everyone likes it, but those number one votes are going to be hard to come by when it’s voting time.

The Martian Review: Matt Damon’s Sci-Fi Gets 4 Stars, Is “One of the Best of the Year”
    ENTERTAINMENTSEP 11, 2015 AT 8:32PMBY MARA REINSTEIN

Ridley Scott’s The Martian isn’t just an excellent sci-fi yarn. It’s one of the year’s best movies and 3D experiences, a crackerjack adventure that celebrates ingenuity over contrivance.

Not only is The Martian one of Scott’s very best films – up there with Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator – it’s easily one of the most engrossing, enthralling and entertaining films of the year.

The Martian” is one of the best movies of the year. It is a wondrous adventure that dreamers and doers, as well as those who set their sights on the heavens, can embrace and rally around.
