After all the fuss last year about leads competing in supporting actress how does this year look? Are any of the early contenders’ categories debatable?September 3, 2016 at 8:09 pm #1201917464
The big one I’ve heard about is Viola Davis for Fences. Personally, I think she’ll be co-lead with Washington, since she won the Lead Tony for the part in the play. However, the play was a revival of the original, and the actress playing the same part in the original won the Featured (Supporting) Actress Tony. So she may be campaigned in Supporting, but I think it’s unlikely.
The studios could also push for Supporting noms for someone like Gosling in La La Land, but that would be unwise. Edgerton or Negga in Loving could be crammed into Supporting, but that would also probably backfire, especially Negga. It doesn’t look like it’s going to be as big of an issue as last year. (Last year’s Best Actress field would have been perfect if Mara had replaced Lawrence)September 3, 2016 at 8:13 pm #1201917465
Based on the play, Viola’s part would be more supporting than her role in The Help which several thought was borderline. Also way more supporting than many recent supporting nominees.
I’m pretty sure she’s gonna make them stick with lead, but it wouldn’t be fraud regardless so it’s irrelevant.September 3, 2016 at 8:20 pm #1201917466
No way Viola will be supporting. She want to win in lead.
I think Amy Adams for Nocturnal Animals could go supportingSeptember 3, 2016 at 8:28 pm #1201917469
Hugh Grant will likely be campaigned supporting for Florence Foster Jenkins, despite being the film’s lead.September 3, 2016 at 8:39 pm #1201917470
Hopefully not….Joan Allen should have been a nominee for “Room” but Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander took supporting spots when they were lead. With that said, I still would have voted for Alicia Vikander despite disliking category fraud so much. It ultimately got her an Oscar! If only Talia Shire (Rocky) had done that …..she’d have an Oscar (for Supporting Actress) rather than just a nomination for lead actress.September 3, 2016 at 8:52 pm #1201917472
I read that Viola’s part in Fences will be expanded from the play. It is a while since I saw the play but I kind of remember the role as borderline. Not really the lead but still pretty big. She seems to want lead so I doubt she’ll go supporting.
I was reminded of this issue by that thread on the 1976 supporting actress race. There you have people like Jane Alexander and Beatrice Straight nominated for two scene roles. (as it should be. It still bugs me that Vikander’s lead role beat Jennifer Jason Leigh’s great comeback performance.)September 3, 2016 at 10:04 pm #1201917475
Winslet would have won instead.
Looking back through the play, I suppose Viola feels more supporting in Act I than II, relatively speaking. She has two super baity scenes that would be her key to winning with each portraying one of the main emotions the Academy likes – angry and sad.September 4, 2016 at 8:40 am #1201917539
Having just finished the play, I found Viola’s role to be classic Supporting Actress.
Interested in how Denzel expands the role to make it “feel” more Lead.September 4, 2016 at 9:08 am #1201917542
Having been privileged to see this brilliant work from August Wilson, Viola is co-lead. Sure, if they really want an almost slam dunk supporting victory for her, they could go that that route. But she completely warrants lead recognition. The story might be about Troy being a bitter defunct Negro league baseball player. But Rose is the heart of the story, as his wife unhappy, but strong willed wife.September 4, 2016 at 9:49 am #1201917549
Amy Adams for Nocturnal Animals is the only one I can think of, but her fraud won’t be Mara level fraud and not even Vikander level fraud. Her case reminds me of Julianne Moore in 2002 when she was clear lead in Far From Heaven like Amy is in Arrival and The Hours where she had clearly more screen time than Kidman but still was campaigned in supporting due she was undeniable lead. Also The Hours was film with three different stories just like Nocturnal though it has two narratives but Amy has much less screen time than Jake and in a lot of her scenes she doesn’t have dialogue so I am pretty sure Focus will try to put her in supporting If Arrival delivers.September 4, 2016 at 10:06 am #1201917552
Hmm, some have speculated that rather than “Viola’s part in Fences will be expanded from the play,” it’ll be that the parts without her will be contracted/excised from the play. Which would serve to make her feel more lead and make the film more palatable as audiences can be restless and impatient the longer a film is.September 5, 2016 at 9:31 am #1201917762
Picking from what goldderby categorizes:
> Leads that may be pushed as Supporting:
Marion Cotillard – Allied
Rooney Mara – Lion
Andre Holland – Moonlight
The only ones I see thus far.
