So far, people are predicting that Felicity Jones could get nominated for Best Actress for Theory of Everything, myself included. Yet something tells me that they could put her in the supporting category. If you take a look at A Beautiful Mind, where Jennifer Connelly won Best Supporting Actress for what was arguably a lead role despite the film being about her character’s husband John Nash, then something similar could happen here. Theory of Everything is about Stephen Hawking and if Jones really does have a lead role, the Academy could still look at her role as the “supportive wife”. What do you guys think?

From what I hear from people who have seen the movie, it’s actually not even really just about Stephen Hawking. Its really about both of them, with the focus actually shifting to her for parts of the movie. Plus the movie is adapted from her memoir, so I can’t really imagine it not being a little controversial if they pushed her supporting.

I could see it. It may be one of the numerous “co-leads going to supporting” cases that plague the Oscars. But I understand.

Maybe,  but I’m waiting until  actually seeing the film until I make that decision.

Based on her memoir. It’s about both of them.
Didn’t Jim Broadbent win supporting for Iris?
It wasn’t a biography of Iris Murdoch. It was about her relationship with her husband and Broadbent had as much screentime as Judi Dench. And the film was based on An Elegy for Iris, written by her husband.
So pretty much this doesn’t mean a lot. A supporting actress campaign could be easier because Jones isn’t an actress you automatically put on your ballot. Maybe she made an impression but many voters would be like “Who was that actress in A Theory of Everything?”
The thing with supporting is that it’s stacked at the moment.

I actually think the opposite. Who are all the Supporting locks? Moore, Pike and Witherspoon all seem safe in Actress, but I think Arquette is the only lock in supporting. Jones has a much better chance in supporting if her role can fit there.

Supporting Actress is the weakest by a mile so if she went here she’d probably win. However, having just returned from seeing the Film if she went supporting it’d be the biggest case of category fraud in Oscar history. I’m not joking. She’s in about 95% of the film.
