I’m really confused on foreign film. I’m currently going with Ida but I think Wild Tales has a real shot of winning. What do you guys think?

It could. It’s a crowd-pleaser. Honestly, I could imagine just about any one of the nominees (aside from maybe Tangerines) taking the top prize. Almost all of them have sizable acclaim and underlying narratives that could propel them to victory

I always assumed it would be Leviathan but I’m leaning towards Ida now

^ Same. I’d been predicting Leviathan to win but I’ve now given up on it. I think it could’ve won with the old system of having to give proof of seeing all 5 nominees, but with the current system it tends to be the film with the most buzz, and Ida has that, as well as bigger box office. Not to mention Ida’s nice and short, therefore perfectly convenient when popping in your screener, unlike Leviathan which might intimidate some with its length. “I have to read a movie for 2 and a half hours? Fuhgeddit!”

I do think length matters, but let’s not forget that The Great Beauty is almost as long as Leviathan and it still won. The only nominee I haven’t seen is Timbuktu and I keep hearing that it feels current unlike any other nominee. It could have a shot.

I hope so; and I say this sight unseen. I’m staying with Ida however; unless the Academy wants to go with something very scathing and pointed, like Leviathan. They wont.

The Great Beauty was a frontrunner for quite a while though, having won European Film Award, Globe and BAFTA. Leviathan only has the least significant of those (the Globe), losing the other two to Ida. I honestly think, with the new voting system, the assumed frontrunner will nearly always win in this category, as some voters may have less strongly defined opinions here than in the Best Picture race and will be even more susceptible to buzz.

The only one i have no seen yet is Timbuktu, i’m predicting Ida but i don’t think is the best:

1-Relatos Salvages- This is by far the best of the group
    2-Tangerines- Really, really good
3-Leviathan – The politics surrounding this film could help it win the Oscar
4-Ida – I like the performances but the whole thing is just weird.
