I like Roberto Benigni’s performance and his movie, although I think Ian McKellen should have won for GODS AND MONSTERS.  Curiously, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL has an 8.5 rating on IMDb and is ranked #62 out of all movies ranked on IMDb, which means somebody likes it a lot.  It certainly doesn’t deserve any special opprobrium other than another instance when Oscar got it wrong.

Firth and Renner were better choices in 09 than either Bridges or Clooney.

None the less, Bridges was still to me the weakest choice.

1997, Robert Duvall  (should have won)
             Matt Damon
             Peter Fonda
             Dustin Huffman
             Jack Nicholson (oscar winner)

    *  It’s one thing that Duvall didnt win when it was soo clear that he should have but, to give it to Jack the worst of all 5 i just dont get. Any of the other choice would’ve been better.

I’m going to take a stab and see what will make your Supporting Actress list.

Gloria Grahame – The Bad and the Beautiful
Ingrid Bergman – Murder on the Orient Express
Geena Davis – The Accidental Tourist
Marisa Tomei – My Cousin Vinny
Juliette Binoche – The English Patient
    Marcia Gay Harden – Pollock

Nice list. For me, Pacino is far and away number 1 but he won for his career so understand the win.

I don’t think any of those would make my list! I suppose Bergman and to a lesser extent Davis would be close.. A couple would be in my top ten best.

Couldn’t agree more. Rewarding Jack for doing a bad jack Nicholson impression was ridiculous but nowhere near as bad as Helen Hunts win.
