For a time it seemed like midnight special was the most hyped movie and then everyone forgot about it. It has decent reviews with a 73% rating on metacritc and 83% on rotten tomatoes so why has midnight special been totally ignored this awards season?

Because it was a DOA and only people who thought it had a chance were Kirsten Dunst fans.

Speaking as one of the Dunst fans, I think there was never any shortage of critical acclaim for the movie or her performance. She got singled out constantly for weaving straw into gold with the few minutes she was given. Honestly, probably the fact that Nichols threw his weight behind Loving is probably the answer. And that’s fair. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga were sublime. So it makes me sad that Midnight Special got short shrift, but I’m sure it’ll be a cult hit.

Awards Daily made a case for Midnight Special and Loving recently…especially given that Loving seems to be losing steam (which is really sad because it was one of my top 3,4 of the year) http://www.awardsdaily.com/2017/01/01/strangers-strange-land-case-loving-midnight-special/

If I may hijack this thread, let me say that Midnight Special is perhaps the most overrated film of the year and I say that as a huge fan of Take Shelter and Mud.

I’m very glad the concept of subjectivity exists. I also hope you know what the word ‘overrated’ means, because by no means was this movie ‘overrated.’

I ALMOST voted for Midnight Special tonight on my Razzie nominating ballot for Worst Screenplay as a write-in, but alas, there simply wasn’t room for it. Not over Batman v Superman and Gods of Egypt, at least.

YES. Even though I also didn’t like Fences and Manchester by-the-sea at all, Casey Affleck and Lucas Hedges still gave good performances, and Viola will be a worthy Oscar winner for her work in Fences. I honestly cannot think of any redeeming qualities Midnight Special had. The music was decent, I guess?!

You must really hate Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst and Joel Edgerton to think they did not give at least ‘good’ performances in Midnight Special. Not a single critic that I can think of agrees with that, at the very least.

I f**king LOVE Michael Shannon (especially 99 Homes), and I think Joel Edgerton was wonderfully subtle in Loving and outright Oscar-worthy along with Tom Hardy in Warrior. Kirsten Dunst was also very good in Fargo, although I didn’t love her as much as most people seemed to.

Hmmm….So then you disagree with the critics and basically everyone else…why? I could get why you didn’t like the movie, fine, art is subjective, jeez, big freaking deal. These were consummate actors giving really beautiful, subtle performances, and you seem to like the actors but no…there’s “nothing redeeming” about Midnight Special?

LOL. Most people think Midnight Special, The Witch, The Lobster, American Honey are among the most underrated films of this year given that they got almost zero awards attention. But, yes, sure—by all means, redefine “overrated.”

It having no awards traction is not it being underrated or overrated to me; that is exactly what I think should happen. Its 76 on Metacritic is why I say that it is overrated. “LOL.”

Fair enough. You didn’t like it. I didn’t think Manchester by the Sea was brilliant (I did like it though), but I do acknowledge that there are lots of people who love it and are legitimately entitled to. Either way, who cares. I’ve over splitting hairs with people with such animus. Sometimes, just watch a movie again. I thought Arrival was super overrated the first time I watched it (partly because I compared it to Midnight Special), but on a second watch I found it to be immensely subtle and very beautiful in a low-key, intelligent way.

Not everyone else LMFAO! Look at Riley, a lot of people really hated Midnight Special. And I said the Music was “decent.”
