Seriously… what went wrong? It was an outstanding movie and it deserved a lot of nominations across the board, specially Best Picture and Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for Gyllenhaal and Downey Jr (or vice versa, I never really figured that category placement out).
Again… what in the earth went wrong?
It’s tempting to say the subject matter was simply far too dark for voters. But that’s quite a load of crap, considering films such as SotL’s won the big five.
Zodiac did make it’s money back, marginally. But overall it was a financial disappointment. Not good for Oscar chances. The fact it was blanked for any Oscar consideration is surprising, especially for writing.
They certainly made it up to him the following year with 10 nods for TCCoBB. Both films may have pacing issues for some viewers, but personally I loved both films.
Peppered with unforgettable scenes.
I don’t think the subject matter or darker approach helped, but ultimately it was just old news in a year with so many offerings when all was said and done. I do think it deserved a lot more than it got, though. It’s arguably his masterpiece.
I still think The Social Network is his masterpiece. Which is a very hard thing for me to say considering I absolutely adore every single one of his films. Gyllenhaal and Downey Jr. were robbed.
The release date is what killed this film’s chances. It was released in March, a block of time where studios generally drop their crap films because they do not believe they will get any awards attention. It was too late for the 2006 awards circus, and too early and long forgotten for the 2007 season.
The film is quite outstanding. Even Jake’s dopey, how can you not love me face could not sink that ship.
