While I was NEVER excited at the fact of Mary playing Nina Simone, Zoe (while a better actress) is not fit for this role at all. This is a miscast if there ever was one.

Update: THR reports that Saldana will indeed be taking the lead role in “Nina” as the iconic singer, Nina Simone. David Oyelowo is still on board, production begins October 16th.

The seemingly forever-developing Nina Simone biopic is still moving, though it has been quite a while since there was been any substantial news. Way back in 2010, Mary J. Blige signed on for the lead with David Oyelowo
to co-star, but very little happened since, and as with most projects
involving musicians and estates, we figured various entanglements were
holding it up. Well, whatever has been going on, it seems there is some
    movement.

IOTG reports that Zoe Saldana is now up for a role in “Nina,” though that’s about all the info there is at the moment. “The Brave One” writer Cynthia Mort
is writing and directing the project about the legendary jazz musician
and civil rights activist whose songs captured the mood of a nation and
community (“Mississippi Goddamn,” “To Be Young Gifted And Black”), and
an artist who really stood in a class of her own. But of all the
interesting moments in her life to focus on, “Nina” will curiously
center on the relationship with her assistant Clifton Henderson (David
Oyelowo) that she maintained later in life. Again, it’s a bit baffling
when the story of her rise from a Juilliard-trained pianist, who ended
up playing Atlantic City clubs and never really thought about singing,
into one of the most influential and empowering performers of her era is
the stuff that seems more suited to a film. Though we reckon that
perhaps some kind of flashback structure will be used.

It’s not clear if Saldana is taking over the lead (Blige seems to have
exited), and she would be an odd choice, so we wonder if Saldana is
portraying Simone, aka Lisa Celeste Stroud,
the musician’s daughter. The ages line up about right — Stroud was
just over 30 years old when her mother passed away — but again, we’ll
see. At any rate, we’re glad to see this one is still kicking around,
but no word how much closer it is to getting made.

^It clearly says in the article that they don’t even know if Zoe Saldana will be playing Nina Simone, or her daughter. This kinda sounds like a disaster anyway.

Check the part where it says update. That was added to the article meaning she OFFICIALLY will be playing Nina Simone. And its rumored that the part was between her and Viola Davis, but they went with Zoe cause she will bring more money to the box office. That role woulda been PERFECT for Viola. Zoe is most certainly miscast in this.

When I first heard about this project, I couldn’t picture anyone else for the part other than India.Arie. And I still can’t.

India.Arie or Viola Davis would’ve been better candidates for this movie.  Hell, I’d even take Mary J. Blige.

Adepero Oduye (Pariah) would’ve been a great choice.

Well, it is rumored that the part got down to Viola Davis and Zoe Saldana, but they went with Zoe cause she would bring in more money.

How would Zoe bring more money? She’s not very recognizable. And Viola is a previous Oscar nominee that just had a huge hit. Doesn’t make any sense. In fact two actresses of different age groups makes even less sense, so this whole thing is weird.
Also, why is an actress of latin heritage playing Nina Simone? This is such a mess.

I do agree India Arie could’ve really worked though.

So, we’re back to “black face” again, are we? Although Zoe Saldana does look a little like Nina Simone.

At any rate, they should go with somebody who can act. In other words, NOT Mary J. Blige. Why go with a singer anyway, when nobody sounds like Nina Simone, certainly not Mary J. Blige. The singing will have to be dubbed.

BTW, where did anyone get the notion that pop singers automatically make good actors?

I dont care very much about numbers, and especially these, but in an attempt to answer the “more money” thing, according to Box Office Mojo

    Viola Davis (15 films)
    Domestic gross: 806,196,100
    Ave: 53,746, 400

    Zoe Saldana (18 films)
    Domestic gross: 1,557,919,500
    Ave: 86,551,100

So I guess the number crunchers think they’re on to something. Uh-huh.

Most of Saldana’s total gross comes from Avatar and Star Trek, the former alone of which comprises almost or more than 50%. Take those 2 films out of the equation, and Davis has the higher total gross and average.

Yeah, Zoe Saldana just happened to be on “Avatar” and “Star Trek”, but I doubt she is listed high on the list of reasons that drove people to watch those films in the first place. To say she is more bankable star based on films that don’t even depend on the name of their actors very much makes no sense.
