Based on the Oscar conversation game that I saw on the Movies forum of Goldderby discussion past Oscar races. I got the idea to do one for the past Grammys. Here I am focusing only on the General Field categories for the 1990 Grammys. Who came in second place and why?

Here are the nominees and winners (are in boldface) for the 1990 Grammys

    Album of the Year
    Quincy Jones-Back on the Block
     Mariah Carey-Mariah Carey
    Phil Collins-But Seriously
MC Hammer-Please Hammer Don’t Hurt Em
    Wilson Phillips-Wilson Phillips

    Record of the Year
    Phil Collins-Another Day in Paradise
    Mariah Carey-Vision of Love
    MC Hammer-U Can’t Touch This
    Bette Midler-From a Distance
    Sinead O’Connor-Nothing Compares 2 U

    Song of the Year
    Bette Midler-From a Distance
    Phil Collins-Another Day in Paradise
    Mariah Carey-Vision of Love
    Sinead O’Connor-Nothing Compares 2 U
    Wilson Phillips-Hold On

    Best New Artist
    Mariah Carey
    The Black Crowes
    The Kentucky Headhunters
    Lisa Stansfield
    Wilson Phillips

    Here is my opinion
Album of the Year: Phil Collins, he was a previous winner in this category in 1985 and the Grammys often like to play safe. It is very rare that new artists who get nominated for this award end up winning so that counts out Mariah and Wilson Phillips

Record of the Year: Bette Midler, she won the previous year for Wind Beneath My Wings and as mentioned before, the Grammys like to go the safe route

Song of the Year: Mariah Carey, she was nominated for all four general field Grammys and I think Vision of Love would have been a fine winner. Also, the Grammys have often given this award to young and upcoming songwriters (Alicia Keys, Lorde, Sam Smith, etc.) to name a few

Best New Artist: Lisa Stansfield, the Grammys have a history of awarding women in this category especially with big vocals.

Album of the Year: Phil Collins – But Seriously
Just like Briana Breeze said: Previous winner, multiple nominations that year and clearly a front-runner for RoTY.

Record of the Year: Sinead O’Connor – Nothing Compares 2 U
It probably felt too Alternative for the mainstream audience.

Song of the Year: Another Day In Paradise
The front-runner and eventual winner for RoTY. And the lyrics are a bit cheesy but not cliche. I wonder why they didn’t show that one.

    Best New Artist: Wilson Phillips
They were the next most popular act after Mariah Carey.

Best New Artist – The fight for second would be Lisa Stansfield versus Wilson Phillips with Wilson Phillips probably getting more votes.

Record of the Year – Bette Midler’s From A Distance was probably second.

Song Of The Year – I will go out on a limb and say Nothing Compares To You could have been second and could have almost won Prince another song writing award.
