MTV BRING VMAS TO BROOKLYN’S BARCLAYS CENTER
    http://www.rap-up.com/2013/03/25/mtv-brings-vmas-to-brooklyns-barclays-center/#more-153477

Hello Brooklyn. The MTV Video Music Awards are headed to thehome of Jay-Z and Biggie for the first time ever.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the show, MTV will broadcast the VMAs from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Sunday, August 25. This also marks the first major annual award show to take place in the borough of Brooklyn.

“From a vibrant musical scene for up and coming artists to epic concerts by today’s biggest stars and the triumphant return of pro sports to the borough after nearly 60 years, Brooklyn has re-emerged as a cultural capitol where music, sports and entertainment history is made every day,” saidStephen Friedman, President of MTV. “We can’t wait to help write the next chapter on August 25th, when one of the biggest nights in music happens in Brooklyn…for the very first time.”

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also welcomed the VMAs to the BK. “Brooklyn is home to icons like the Cyclone in Coney Island and the Brooklyn Bridge, and now it can lay claim to the MTV ‘Video Music Awards,’” he said. “Bringing the VMAs to Brooklyn will mean hundreds of jobs as crews work on the production and provide a boost to our local economy as attendees stay in hotels, visit local eateries and experience all Brooklyn and our City have to offer.”

The show has been held in Los Angeles for the past three years. The last time it took place in New York was in 2009 when it was held at Radio City Music Hall.

The Barclays Center opened in September and is home to the Brooklyn Nets. Jay-Z christened the venue with a week-long series of sold-out concerts, which saw appearances from Beyoncé and Big Daddy Kane.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will have big exposure from this, hopefully MTV gets it right and nominate them for the big prize. On the other hand, I think PSY could show up too for ‘Gangnam Style’… I don’t think there’s a clear frontrunner to take this though… but if it’s fan-voted, the trend will continue and the pop female (Taylor Swift) could end up winning…

    Video of the Year

    PSY – Gangnam Style
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Wanz – Thrift Shop
    Justin Timberlake – Mirrors
Taylor Swift – I Knew You Were Trouble
    Imagine Dragons – Radioactive

And going further, I’d like to make a bold prediction and say that outside of those, ‘Mirrors’ is the one with the best chance to repeat the nomination a the Grammys!

Queen Khia – You left out Justin Bieber & Nicki Minaj’s “Beauty and a Beat” for Best Collaboration Video.

Leonardo – Taylor Swift will repeat with nominations at the Grammys too.  Also – PSY appeared on stage at the 2012 MTV VMAs.  He won’t return.

If Mary J. Blige’s “Just Fine” can make into Best Hip-Hop video, I think Migue’s “Adorn” has a chance of making it in

There’s probably about 2+ months left of eligibility, so I’m still waiting to see about predictions.  However, P!nk should 100% be nominated for (and win) the Best Choreography award for “Try.”  I don’t care who else they nominate, P!nk better be there,

I also hope they continue with those unexpected (but deserving) nominees for the tech awards.  Over the past few years it’s been a pleasure to see people llike Regina Spektor, Manchester Orchestra, Dan Black, etc., be up for Moonmen and I’d like to see that continue.  Plus, it’s nice to discover awesome new videos through the VMAs.

As for who’s guaranteed nods this year:  JT (he’s got two strong entries; I wonder if MTV will resist the urge to nominate David Fincher [“Suit & Tie”] for Best Direction and go with Floria Sigismondi [‘Mirrors”]), Bruno Mars, Rihanna, P!nk, Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

Holding out hope for great video artists like Passion Pit, Matt & Kim, Of Monsters & Men, and Muse to get some recognition as well.  Hell, even a nod for David Bowie for Best Male Video (in the veteran spot) would be nice!

They tend to snub R&B videos though.

Have you seen the M&RL clip for ‘Can’t Hold Us’, it’s brilliant, they’re on fire, and I think this will be nominated for the top prize over ‘Thrift Shop’… also technical noms.

I don’t think that Imagine Dragons is eligible for BNA, since they were nominated for Best Rock Video last year.  (IIRC, that’s partially how their buzz started, right?)

I’m really curious to see what the Best New Artist lineup looks like.  Artists like Ellie Goulding, Ed Sheeran, Icona Pop, and The Lumineers (and others, I’m sure) hit it big in late 2012-early 2013, but their videos came out during the previous eligibility period (and likely aired on at least one MTV channel once they came out).  I wonder if MTV has deemed them ineligible for BNA or if they’ll just make them eligible for later videos…  The category would look odd without at least one of these.

I’m here for the performances. They could actually put together a killer performance line-up this year. Don’t blow it MTV.
