I know people are doing their VMA predictions on the main VMA topic, but I had a more specific question.  Every year when we make predictions for the VMAs, there are some videos/artists that we just include because, well, it’s MTV (Katy, Beyoncé, Bieber, Nicki)…  And others we include because they’ve had an amazing year that MTV could simply not ignore (unless they’re the Black Eyed Peas).

That being said, though, sometimes these ‘sure shots’ truly deserve those VMA nods because of the quality of their videos and songs.  So tell me, which guaranteed nominees are you actually rooting for this 2014??

And on the flip side, which videos/artists do you consider long shots but are still hoping they get a nomination, even if a technical one??

Feel free to say why and what categories they will/could be up for, give us a YouTube link so we can get to know this amazing video, etc.

    Long Shots:

    Lady Gaga – Applause/G.U.Y
    Best Female Video
    Best Pop Video
    Video Of The Year
    Tech Categories

She has won 13 VMA’s, won 8 in just one night, both videos are pretty good and are deserving of a nomination in any category.

Lana Del Rey – West Coast/Shades Of Cool
    Best Female Video
    Tech Categories

4 times nominated (2 in Best Art Direction, 2 in Best Cinematography), she could be nominated again this year.

I think Lana has more of a chance to be nominated for Shades of Cool in professional categories than West Coast, to be honest. It is a real longshot, but Shades of Cool can be nominated for Best Video. G.U.Y. has a chance for Best Female Video. Miley Cyrus has a sureshot for Best Female and Best Video. Iggy also for same categories.

I think some long shots worth considering are (not just video of the year specificly)

“Best Friend” by Foster the People
    “Lazereto” by Jack White
    “Reflecktor” by Arcade Fire
The ARTPOP film by Lady GaGa

    Possible
    “Chandelier” by Sia
    “Birthday” by Katy Perry
“Love Runs Out” by One Republic
    “Sing” by Ed Sheeran

    Very Likely

    “Fancy” by Iggy
“Problem” by Arianna Grande (even though the editing is poor it’s still a fun video)
“Roar” by Katy Perry (was it eligiable last year?)
“Applause” by Lady GaGa (or was it eligibale last year? I forget)
“Story of my Life” by One Direction

Pray to god doesn’t get it

“Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus (seriously it’s just her riding on a Wrecking Ball and getting a wedgie by her tight clothing. So overrated)
     “Bound 2” by Kanye West

roar and applause were not eligible last year. they missed the deadline so both videos are eligible this year. those videos came out the same time as wrecking ball, but didn’t have the same impact, so roar and applause are not likely to be nominated (well applause most likely).

What is the eligibility date period for this year’s VMAs?

It’s always a bit of a mystery, but the most recent eligibility periods that have been known have ended in very late June or very early July  (2009 was June 19-June 29; 2011 ended June 24 according to MTV; 2012 was July 1-July 2 according to some insider article).  Who knows, though?

I think it’s August-July because the nominations come out really close to the show but i’m not sure. They only give you a few weeks to vote. Roar was just a visually well made video and Katy Perry gets good love at awards shows so I think it’s the bigger chance than Birthday
