The Grammy’s and the media will make it all about Beyonce vs Adele.

They already are. Apparently only Beyonce and Adele are leading the nominations according to every news headline, when really Adele must be like 5th or 6th in the leaderboard. People like Drake, Rihanna, Kanye, Chance the Rapper got more nominations.

I predicted Bieber for aoty cuz of the following, which I posted forever ago:
For this decade’s ceremonies, albums with multiple #1s – AOTY nominees?
    Rihanna Yes
    Black Eyed Peas Yes
    Katy Perry Yes then No
    Bruno Mars Yes then no
    Taylor Yes
    Adele Yes
    Eminem Yes
    Macklemore and Ryan Lewis Yes
    Weeknd Yes
    Gaga Yes
    LMFAO No
    Bieber ?
Hmm, 91% of them got one the first time they did it.

…AOTY vs. Album Sales T10 Weeks, by my count:
    35 Adele
    20 Bey
    17 Bieber
    16 Drake
    1 Sturgill

    [5th place: 10 Blake Shelton]
Ineligible, weeks since October – Stapleton 34+
    Twenty One Pilots 12+++
    Hamilton 10+

Hmm. So going straight by sales longevity, you get 4 of the 5 nominees. Counting ineligibles, you’d get a country male to fill out a T5 in longevity. Counting eligibles, you’d get a country male to fill out a T5 in longevity. Instead, the 5th slot goes to yet another country male.

This is a pretty weak AOTY line up.

Views is an overrated album but you’d have been a fool to not predict it in this category. It went 4x Platinum, produced one of the biggest hits of the year, and dominated the charts for weeks.

Justin Bieber getting in doesn’t surprise me either. I called it from the very beginning. The album was huge with sales and streaming. It’s his “Teenage Dream” moment.

Lemonade is positioned as the winner but I’m not underestimating the power of 25. Urban music does NOT win here. Adele is the safe, predictable choice. I think she ultimately wins.

Becky is winning 3-4 awards and she’s not winning AOTY. None of her albums have deserved this prize. Rihanna should be pissed by her snub. Her album is ten times better than Lime Juice. She didn’t hop on the “black lives matter” movement to sell records like Becky and her sister.

Adele is the Becky here though.

Bey should, and I believe will, win.

Oh the irony of Becky having 80 Grammys and desperate to win AOTY.

When I think of the artists who have never won (hello Nas) and the fact that she’s been over-rewarded, it truly shows that the industry will always be about high school politics.

obviously urban artists tend to get more nominations due to more categories available for them. adele got tons of nominations for a pop album, bey dominated by earning noms across a number genres. they lead the nominations that way. it’s not cut and dried merely counting the nominations.

I think Beck is a better comparison. Sturgill Simpson is a critical favorite, not a veteran.

isn’t Beck also a veteran? a better comparison would be arcade fire.

Let’s talk about how Rihanna got in across the board in R&B and Beyonce was snubbed for Performance/Song. 🙂

Sturgill Simpson will be next year’s Herbie Hancock.

I think Beck is a better comparison. Sturgill Simpson is a critical favorite, not a veteran.

I meant the year when he won his win came from out of left field over Amy Winehouse and assorted others who sold way more records than Herbie did that year his brilliant Joni Mitchell inspired album won.

Do you think they want to award James Blake, Kendrick Lamar & The Weeknd (featured artist) with the AOTY award, if Beyoncé wins? I don’t see that happening for now, it would be great though.

Also, they award sonically cohesive albums. Last year, 1989 was a shi*** winner, but it was undeniably cohesive like previous winners. Lemonade’s sound is all over the place.

Will they award pop albums back to back? Adele winning this is more plausible, if Adele wins, Max Martin, Ryan Tedder & Tom Coyne are winning AOTY again, with the last two winning for the third time, Bruno Mars & co. will win too.

Sturgill Simpson could surprise, they haven’t awarded a country album since 2010.

It’s between Adele and Sturgill Simpson. Adele is the safest choice, she will win.

Well Said. It really comes down to what the voters care more about. Beyonce can be seen as “overdue” for this award. So will more voters go for Beyonce simply because she hasnt won before OR will more choose Adele because of her obvious mass appeal (she swept the grammys with 21). I agree that Adele is the safe choice.
