Some artists and bands keep their artistic integrity despite what their big record labels say. And some just… follow the money. What are some artists and bands that traded their art for mainstream popularity?

Maroon: 5 after Songs About Jane

    Katy Perry since the beginning

Taylor Swift: after Speak Now and sold her soul to Max Martin. The pop songs Red and 1989 have no traces of her personality. 1989 had great pop songs, but they could have been written for any artist.

Coldplay after Viva La Vida. They are this generation’s U2.

    21 pilots: gross

Maroon 5 is definitely the first band I thought of.

I agree about Taylor Swift to a certain degree.

Obviously Heart sold out in the late 80s/early 90s.

Jewel with INTUITION, although she did poke fun at selling out in the video.

Some people felt that Sheryl Crow sold out with SOAK UP THE SUN but she had very poppy hooks before that too.

Although I love the song…Bryan Adams definitely had sell out moment when he released THE ONLY THING THAT LOOKS GOOD ON ME IS YOU.

How can you sell out while still making critically acclaimed music? I mean since speak now Taylors won 4 Grammys (including AoTY) and been nominated 3 times for RotY and twice for SotY and AotY.

Sell outs usually make crappy music in favor or being popular.

The prime example for me is Maroon 5 they were great before the Voice and now it’s like Adam Lavigne & Co.

I don’t think selling out necessarily = crappy music.

Art is subjective. In my opinion, her talent as a writer faded away after she stopped writing so explicitly about her life and only used innuendo for tabloid fodder. She chose fame over her talent. I really liked her. It’s not easy to see a talented artist choose to be the “pop” star of her generation rather than only let her music speak for itself.

For me the first thing that comes to mind is Maroon 5. They went from a band that blended pop rock and soul effortlessly to a band that made pop songs for the radio. “Don’t Wanna Know” made me cringe SO HARD. Also I love Twenty One Pilots especially their old albums, but I respect your opinion.

I don’t think Paramore sold out. I think they matured as a band musically. Though I do miss the punky feel of early songs.

I love Paramore their last album was by far their best. “Now” is still very punk. They just had Pop song with “Still Into You” but other than that they’ve stayed in their lane musically. “Anklebiters” and “Ain’t It Fun” are two songs that still feel like Paramore to me.

Oh I know! Fall Out Boy. American Beauty/American Psycho was fine, but they were definitely going into more poppy, radio friendly territory. I mean you got their signature song which has a lyric that till this day we can’t figure out: “A loaded god complex cock it and pull it”. And then Uma Thurman saying: “The stench, the stench, of summer sex and CK eternity, oh hell yes”. Did someone kidnap Pete Wentz for god’s sake? And then their was Ghostbusters. We all know what happened. Anyways, admittedly Patrick’s voice has gotten stronger.

    Nicki Minaj
She went from Lil’ Kim impersonator rapper to female Flo Rida.

    The Black Eyed Peas
They went from conscious rappers to “My Humps” and “Dirty Bit”.

    Pitbull
He went from hard spitting Miami rapper to frequent J.Lo feature.

I can literally outline a Pitbull song in a few words. Clubs, parties and girls. No need for anything else just… clubs, parties and girls.
