Part of me thinks that the voters don’t want to reward Ed this year. Again, I think Kesha will win because it’ll be such a “Grammy moment” (and she is deserved). I can already see the standing ovation.
There’s no reason to believe voters aren’t into Ed Sheeran. The big four nominations are determined by a small group that doesn’t reflect the voting body at large. There’s a reason why many people were predicting him to make a full sweep before the nominations came out. He’s been well liked by the Grammys for awhile and this year was their chance to reward him hugely.
Aside from Adele beating Carly Rae Jepsen in 2013, the biggest hit has ALWAYS won this category. This year should be no different, especially since Shape of You was bigger than the other four nominees combined.

ReplyCopy URLDecember 26, 2017 at 11:53 am #1202449093I think this is going to be a topsy turvy year. This category especially is up for grads.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 27, 2017 at 7:59 am #1202449602Get real! This category is NOT “up for grabs.” Even Stevie Wonder can see that Ed Sheeran is winning this category.

That’s my thinking as well. This year’s Grammys are going to be unpredictable like no other. Still predicting Kesha to upset.
Gaga is leading this poll? Wow, okay.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 27, 2017 at 12:08 pm #1202449789Honey, this category is too awful to be presented on air. Best Pop Duo/Group Performance will probably be televised two years in a row.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 27, 2017 at 8:35 pm #1202450111I see Monsters have been voting like crazy in the poll to make us believe Gaga is the frontrunner and complain when she loses. ROFL
ReplyCopy URLDecember 28, 2017 at 11:15 am #1202450489It’s very hard for me to think that Ed will win both of his nominations. Some people here are comparing him to Justin Timberlake’s “snub” in 2014, but Justin had 7 nominations there. Ed has 2, same amount Kesha and Gaga have. I think that he’s winning Pop Solo, but Pop Vocal he might be losing to Kesha. She had a ton of critical acclaim, and good sales, plus a hit.
Gaga won’t get anything.
I think both Pop Solo AND Pop Vocal are Kesha vs Ed because the Grammy’s look very “different” this year. There might be risks taken this year.
Praying’s cultural impact was big, but unfortunately it wasn’t as big as Shape of You. I think that she’ll win Pop Vocal for 3 reasons:
a) Ed seems to be acting petty about his noms and Grammy’s don’t like pettiness.

b) Ed Sheeran will 100% get nominations next year for Perfect and his next single (probably a solo, so that he can submit in Pop Solo). His team will want his next songs to be eligible, plus the Grammy’s will save some of his Grammy’s for next year, when he inevitably wins Pop Duo for Perfect and ROTY as well.
c) Kesha’s success story will be enough to cause controversy if she loses to the “token white guy”. The Grammy’s will avoid getting bashed for sexism, specially since it’s KESHA aka a feminist icon of 2017.December 28, 2017 at 12:05 pm #1202450543Grammys always plays safe. I doubt Kesha is THAT strong.
Pop Vocal always goes to the bestseller since 2010, it doesn’t matter if the album is bad, less impactful than others or critically bashed. The only exception is “Stronger” but we know Kelly is favored by the academy and the title song was a #1 hit nominated to ROTY and SOTY. “In the Lonely Hour” should have lost the award to “X”, but Sam’s the epitome of Grammy bait and had very good sales too.
If Divide doesn’t win, Joanne will, unfortunately
I’d give the award to Kesha or Lana. But if even Britney, Christina and Pink never won the category, I don’t see how one of those two will, after being snubbed by the Grammys for years. If Kesha wins something, it will be Pop Solo, since the frontrunner(SOY) is a very bad song and totally opposite to what the Grammys usually reward, while Praying is exactly what the Grammys love. I could be wrong and she could win both, but I doubt that.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 28, 2017 at 12:53 pm #1202450563Is “Shape of You” really a song that isn’t rewarded by the Grammys, though? The closest example of “Shape of You” would be “Happy” (Live), which was also a variant of a big hit but not necessarily praised to the heavens by critics. It even beat out ROTY/SOTY winner “Stay With Me.”
“Praying” didn’t have cultural impact.
I can see Pop Vocal Album and Pop Duo/Group being presented before Pop Solo. Both categories are way more competitive and interesting than Pop Solo this year.

Justin was entered/eligible in a lot more categories than Ed. He was in R&B categories for Pusher Love Girl and rap categories for Holy Grail. And he had a collab eligible in Pop Duo/Group. Aside from the general field and Music Video, Ed appeared everywhere he entered. (not counting his songwriting for other artists)

Happy was even bigger than SOY and still, it was an exception. I think SOY is gonna win anyway, I was just trying to make sense of HOW and WHY it could not. If a song like Million Reasons or Praying was a smash hit, it could win. Since they’re not that, SOY wins easily. (And you’re wrong about Happy, it was praised by critics. But we both know that was a nonfactor and it would win anyway thanks to its huge success. lol)
I think they’ll decide which category to show on the telecast based on people attending or not. Pop Solo has 4 pop divas and Ed Sheeran, if they all attend, they’ll broadcast it live. I think they’ll show both Pop Solo and Pop Vocal if the winners aren’t the same(Ed). Pop Duo/Group will be shown if Ed wins both Pop Solo and Pop Vocal and if the winner is not the same as ROTY/SOTY(which could only be Despacito).
ReplyCopy URLDecember 28, 2017 at 4:06 pm #1202450674I don’t think “Happy” was “bigger” than “Shape of You,” not once you break down the stats. If it was about which song was bigger, “Shape of You” would win in a landslide here, while “Happy” went up against four other big hits.
