If the category existed assuming that “Blank Space”, “Thinking Out Loud” and “See You Again” are the 1st three nominees what two other pop songs do you think would grab a nomination for Pop songwriting?

While Pop Song may not be a category that should exist, I think it makes more sense than Best Rap Song existing, IMO.

    Why is that?

Rap really isn’t a “songwriting” genre. Some rap songs have amazing lyrics like “Lose Yourself” or “One Man Can Change the World”, but a lot of them are just about getting drunk or girls with big breasts or butts and sex and I feel that a lot of them shouldn’t really deserve to be nominated.

Rap songs are literally 50/50 on songwriting “Trap Queen” is nominated for its songwriting while “Love Me Like You Do” isn’t.

“Love Me Like You Do” is nominated for songwriting.  It received a songwriters nomination in the category of Best Song Written For Visual Media.

Honey, if “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space” and “Poker Face” (just to name a few) can be nominated for songwriting, so can “Trap Queen.”

Honey, there’s a big difference in all three of those songs and “Trap Queen” one for instance is the last three were in English. In five years no one will remember Trap Queen while you apparently still remember “Pokerface” 6 years later.

Honey, no one will remember “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space” in five years.  People barely remember “Poker Face.”  The point I was making is that those songs by Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga are examples of terrible songwriting.  Those lyrics make “Trap Queen” a frickin’ masterpiece.

Most likely “Uptown Funk!” and “Love Me Like You Do,” give or take “Heartbeat Song” (Kelly’s been known to knock out GF heavyweights before).

As Back to Basics points out, you can find subpar songwriting skills in both genres if you try hard enough.

Mainstream rap and pop are so popular because they are built on enjoyability. Many people like hearing these song at parties or clubs or dances. Many people like to bop and sing along to said songs when driving in their cars. These type of songs tap into the fundamental function of music – enjoyment.

Also to me, Trap Queen is very much a pop adjacent song. It has an infectious beat and a catchy chorus, two key markers of pop songs, and as a song like “Shake It Off” so easily proves, a song does not have to have deep, riveting lyricism to be enjoyed by a multitude of people or to be recognized for its “impact” on contemporary music and pop culture.

And it’s funny that someone above made a point of cast typing rap music into one singular theme  when of the songs nominated in the Rap Song categories, none are “just about getting drunk or girls with big breasts or butts and sex”
