I would feel pretty bad if I found out that Kidz Bop sold more records than me. Last year had better eligible albums. Gaga is in the top 10 for now.

I have updated the chart’s sales figures, and have also added a column of tracks from the album that charted either on the Billboard Hot 100 or the Bubbling Under chart.

    Enjoy! 🙂

Willie Nelson’s To All the Girls was submitted for Grammy consideration last year, thanks to its vinyl release.

Foreverly (by Billie Joe Armstrong & Norah Jones) should be on the list too, as it has sold around 143,000 copies to date.

Good day everyone. I’m a first time poster but long time reader. I decided to finally take the plunge and sign up so that I can add to the discussion.

For my first post, I wanted to know what you guys think about album certifications (gold, platinum, diamond, etc.) and the criteria we use for each distinction now and if it should be revamped. Looking at this thread for eligible albums and only a handful sold/shipped over one million copies. Should album certification criteria shift to take into account the new digital era we are in where people simply buy less albums? Is selling 500K today, the equivalent of selling 2M copies 10 years ago? And should the certifications reflect that? E.g. should 250K be made the new threshold for a gold certification? Just want to know your thoughts on this.

Welcome to GoldDerby! I personally think that the threshold for a Gold certification should not be lowered below 500,000. I wouldn’t mind if they introduced a new Silver album certifcation for 250,000 copies. Lowering the standard for obtaining a Gold record would also throw off career totals that artists have, and it’s easier to keep track of total shipments artists have had if a Gold record in 1980 equates to the same figure as it does today.

Also, it would seem a bit strange if an album only had to sell 15 million copies today to surpass Michael Jackson’s RIAA total of 29 million copies in order to have the highest-certified album.

Artists today have no problem getting Gold records. But they’re for singles. And that’s what artists sell more of these days. If albums aren’t selling as well these days as they were, I don’t think the RIAA should inflate their numbers. They should leave them as is, to reflect the album sales of today.
