Calvin Harris just announced his new album “Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1”, set for release on June 30th. He has moved away from his EDM mainstage pop to a 70s funk/90s R&B flavor, as previewed on the first 2 singles “Slide” featuring Frank Ocean & Migos, and “Heatstroke” featuring Young Thug, Pharrell Williams & Ariana Grande.
The new album touts additional guest appearances from Travis Scott, Kehlani, Future, Katy Perry, Big Sean, John Legend, Khalid, Schoolboy Q, Nicki Minaj, D.R.A.M., Lil Yachty, Jessie Reyez, Partynextdoor & Snoop Dogg.
It would be interesting if the album is entered as Best Dance/Electronic Album, or it branches out to the pop category, a strategy that didn’t translate to nominations for the similarly hip-hop inspired pop of Major Lazer
I’ll put an eye on it for Best Dance/Electronic Album; it has big enough features and Calvin is overdue a Grammy of his own. However The Chainsmokers or Cashmere Cat might steal it.
The album’s first single, “Slide” featuring Frank Ocean & Migos, has been certified Platinum by the RIAA
I hope the album beats Jay Z boring ass new album
The album is worth at least being one of the top 10 AOTY contenders for a nomination. It’s an impressive reinvention of Calvin Harris, a seamless showcase of all vocal collaborators creating the perfect summer pop album. Calvin Harris has left the EDC main stage and is throwing back to the MTV Beach House days
Disappointed in this. LOVED Calvin’s change of style. “Slide”, “Feels”, “Heatstroke”…all great stuff. The problem is the rest of the album are those same beats warmed over. Even at 10 tracks, its repetitive. Too bad.
