There’s no one obvious like Sam Smith was last year, but there are also people like Fun who can take us by surprise by getting all four general-field nominations (not too many were anticipating “Some Nights” would get in AOTY). This year I think that’s going to be tough. I don’t think anyone quite has that combo of big breakthrough single + big breakthrough album. Maybe if Meghan Trainor had “All About that Bass” in this race instead of the last one, though she could still get in Record and Song again this year.

Any likely candidates, or even longshot candidates for the achievement, or is it just not gonna happen this year?

Are you speaking specifically of nominations? Like a Mariah/Sam Smith/*Norah Jones/Amy Winehouse/Paula Cole-type nomination sweep? Not this year. There are literally no new artists that have had that type of impact.

No. This was an incredibly weak year for new artists.

Adele almost pulled a full sweep in 2009 if “19” had been up for AoTY, which i kind of think it should have over NeYo’s album

No new artists will be nominated in all four General Field categories at all.  The closest bet you have will be Sam Hunt, as he’s a contender at least in the Big 3, but may end up with only a Best New Artist nomination.

I think there’s a slight (slight) chance that Leon Bridges or Elle King could make it into ROTY or SOTY for “Smooth Sailin'” or “Ex’s and Oh’s”, but both are extreme longshots.  Fetty Wap could make it into ROTY, but won’t make AOTY.  Those are the only real new artist contenders I can even see making other GF categories at all.

No new artist will be nominated outside of Best New Artist.

If The Weeknd was submitted for Best New Artist, then he would definitely pull a sweep, but he’ll likely be AOTY, ROTY and SOTY this year.

I have a funny feeling he won’t get into SotY “Can’t Feel My Face” is not one of the best written songs that hit the top 40. “Earned It” and “The Hills” where better.

All four? No. Sam Hunt has the best chance to take the most noms in the general field for new artists, but at most, I only see him getting three out of four. Would love to be pleasantly surprised, though.

Agreed, there will definitely not be a “Sam Smith” or “fun.”-like sweep this year.

I wouldn’t totally rule out Meghan Trainor or Hozier. They didn’t have songs as big as the ones that were nominated last year, but if the recording academy loves them — especially given the dearth of other obvious breakthrough acts — I can see them overperforming in the nominations.

I’ll give you Meghan Trainor, but what has Hozier possibly done this eligiblility cycle that would warrant anything other than Best New Artist? His only hit was nominated last year and his album was a non-factor. He would be lucky to be a BNA nominee, but if Ed Sheeran was able to get a nomination for BNA a year after his Song of the Year nod, then Hozier should have no issues doing so either.

Hozier is 100% worthy of an AOTY nomination, though I don’t think he’ll get it. Plus, he has no major song like “Take Me To church” from his debut album that would garner him a ROTY or SOTY nomination. I think “Someone New” was submitted but I doubt it will get a General Field nomination.

Meghan Trainor is likely to get a BNA nod, but I would be very surprised if Title got an AOTY nomination, let alone if any of her other songs received nominations in the General Field (I think “Lips are Movin” was nominated?)
