I think we can agree that ‘urban music’ doesn’t always get treated the best at the Grammys. But that shouldn’t stop us from liking it. What are some of our favorite critically acclaimed hip hop/r&b albums, singles, mixtapes, etc?

My favorite “urban” records in contention for this year’s GRAMMYs are definitely Kendrick Lamar’s “Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City”, Rihanna’s “Unapologetic”, ASAP Rocky’s “Long Live ASAP”, J.Cole’s “Born Sinner”, Fantasia’s “Side Effects of You”, and Kid Cudi’s “Indicud”

Good choices guys!! I agree with all of those. . . what about songs? Also what albums/songs should’ve gotten better recognition in the past?

Elle Varner’s debut is very good. Some standout songs include “Soundproof Room,” “Not Tonight,” “Stop The Clock,” and “I Don’t Care.”

Miguel’s Kaleidoscope Dream is awesome throughout and would have been my pick for Best Urban Contemporary Album last year.  Standouts include “Kaleidoscope Dream,” “How Many Drinks,” “Arch & Point,” “Do You…” and “Adorn.”

Those r two great albums m.A.A.d glad you brought those up. I was reading this article about the most critically acclaimed r&b/hip hop songs this year a while ago. . . these r some of the ones that were brought up:

    Tamar Braxon- Love & War
    Kelly Rowland- Dirty Laundry
    Drake- Started from the Bottom
Drake- Hold On, We’re Going Home
    Kanye West- Black Skinhead
    Big Sean- Control
    Sevyn Streeter- It Won’t Stop
John Legend – Made to Love
    A$AP Rocky- 1 Train
    Robin Thicke- Blurred Lines

Those r the ones I can remember off the top of my head that were on that list as being critically lauded.

Drake’s new album is really good, “The Furthest Thing”, “Started From The Bottom”, “Worst Behavior”, “The Language”, and “Hold On, We’re Going Home” are my favorites.

Janelle’s new album is also fantastic, “Givin Em What They Love”, “The Electric Lady”, “Primetime” and “Dance Apocalyptic” are my favorites.

From Kaleidescope Dream, how could you forget “Use Me”? lol, God that song is pure magic.
