Yesterday the nominees for The 55th Annual Grammy Award were announced, and NARAS proved that sometimes they do get it right. So, question existing: what were your favorite nominations?

    Mine are:
    – “The A Team” for SOTY.
    – “Set Fire To The Rain (LIVE)” for Best Pop Vocal Solo Performance.
    – “We Found Love” for Best Short Form Music Video
    – All of the Frank Ocean nominations.

Miguel’s “Adorn” for Song of the Year. I was one of the few people who even suggested a nomination there.

Pop/Duo Group Performance: Florence and the Machine, “Shake It Up”
Pop Vocal Album: Pink, “The Truth About Love”
Dance Recording: Swedish House Mafia ft. John Martin, “Don’t You Worry Child”
Traditional Pop Vocal Album: Michael Buble, “Christmas”
Traditional R&B Performance: Beyonce, “Love on Top” (wasn’t it submitted last year?!)
Rap/Sung Collaboration: Flo Rida ft. Sia, “Wild Ones” (fresh air in this category among usual suspects, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Rihanna)

Wow. There is alot of hypocrisy on these boads. I remember a couple of years ago, when Beyonce was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Halo (Live)”, people on these boards freaked out, and said was ridiculous she was nominated for a live song. But people are celebrating Adele’s nomination for “Set Fire to The Rain (Live)”???

I’m just saying we shouldn’t chastise one artist for doing something, but celebrate another artist for doing the same thing.

The difference is that when Beyonce’s “Halo” (Live) was nominated the following year, she got in for the exact same song that she won the year prior. The same can’t be said for Adele. Had it been Someone Like You (Live) that got nominated, then you’d see complains here.

    Favorite nominations:

“Cherry Wine” for Nas and Amy Winehouse. <—She still goin’ at it.
“Stronger” for ROTY, I thought was very well deserved
The Out of the Blue Jack White nomination. I guess he was the veteran slot? But I thought it was a good choice. His album was quite good.
All of the Black Keys nods, most of which were expected. I hope they take AOTY.
“Bad Girls” for M.I.A in Short Form MV. I really hope she wins. I’d have prefered this in Record of the Year.
AOTY –> Channel Orange has to be one of the most overrated albums to have appeared, but compared to the recent years, this one’s a pretty strong line-up, except maybe fun. but they’re refreshing to see. I would haved to see Miranda Lambert or Florence in there though.
Speaking of which, Florence’s nods!! I hope she wins it for Shake it Out.
“Adorn” in SOTY –> a track from one of the better albums of the year.

I agree that most people were complaining because it was the same song that was nominated again, just that it was sung live. i think there have been a couple of other singers/bands who have been nominated live versions of the song. I think Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” was nominated for their live version too. I have yet to check and confirm though. I am fine with the Adele nod since it was a different song.

It’s nice to see Esperanza Spalding, Drake Florence and the Machine, and Mumford and Sons all get nominations in their respective categories.

    Who’s missing from this list?

Some of my favorites (in no particular order):

Frank Ocean’s various nominations, especially Record of the Year for “Thinkin’ Bout You”
“Let Me Be Your Star” from “Smash” in Song Written for Visual Media
Rihanna’s “We Found Love” in Short-Form Music Video
Mumford & Sons’ “I Will Wait” in Best Rock Performance & Rock Song
“The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess” in Musical Theater Album
The nominees in Rap/Sung Collaboration, especially “Tonight (Best I Ever Had)” (excellent vocal from John Legend there) and “Cherry Wine” (Nas & Amy Winehouse)
“Niggas in Paris” in Rap Performance (Jay-Z & Kanye West)
Gotye’s “Making Mirrors” in Alternative Album
“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” in Score Soundtrack for Visual Media (Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross)
M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” in Short-Form Music Video

I’ve finally had some time to process these Grammy nominations.

    Here are my initial thoughts:

    Good

-The various nominations for The Black Keys are very well deserved. “El Camino” is one of the strongest albums of the eligibility period. Plus, the album dropped in late 2011 so it’s always nice when voters remember “old albums.”

-There’s a lot of diversity in the general field. You have pop (Taylor Swift, Fun, Carly Rae Jepsen, Kelly Clarkson), rock (Black Keys, Jack White), folk (Mumford and Sons, Ed Sheeran) and R&B (Frank Ocean, Miguel)

-The Best New Artist category is full of very talented artists. There isn’t a single dud in that lineup.

-Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj and One Direction were rightfully snubbed. Their material just wasn’t awards worthy

     Bad

-Some categories (e.g. Traditional Pop Vocal Album, Urban Contemporary R&B Album) only have three nominees. Why don’t they just scrap the categories if the contenders are that minimal?

-fun got way too many nominations. “We Are Young” is a cool song, but Album of the Year and Pop Album nods are unnecessary. The album itself just isn’t very good.

-Not a single female act was nominated for Album of the Year. Florence + the Machine’s “Ceremonials” was one of the eligibility’s best records. The band would’ve made an excellent nominee.

     Ugly

-Random, undeserved nominations for subpar material. Grammy voters just can’t get out of certain habits. Did voters really need to nominate Katy Perry and Rihanna in Pop Performance for some of their worst singles? LMFAO was also nodded in the pop field for “Sexy and I Know It.”

    More thoughts coming soon.
