Wow, I haven’t been in the Grammys for a long time. Anyway, I was watching the Radio 1 Live Lounge covers (which are amazing, btw), and was curious as to what everyone’s live performances were.

    Here’s an example:

Amy Winehouse – I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know
Wowza. Such a great loss to the music world.

Just a few from the live lounge..

Ben Howard – ‘Call Me Maybe’ (Carly Rae Jepsen)
Ellie Goulding – ‘Only Girl in the World’ (Rihanna)
Marina and the Diamonds – ‘Boyfriend’ (Justin Bieber)

All 3 completely changed them into much more meaningful beautiful songs.

    Right? Amazing voice.

Anyway, here’s another link: It’s Coldplay covering Kylie Minogye at the Glastonbury Festival. Not perfect vocals but damn good cover. and one of my favorites.

I love live performances, and nothing bothers me more than when singers resort to lipsynching rather than embrace the challenges and great rewards of live singing.  It breathes life into the song, and is really something else when a performer can elevate what they did in the studio to a higher level in concert.  Performing is a skill in and of itself, and many well-known artists are more studio singers than live performers.  Michael Jackson, for instance, used to lipsynch many songs in his concerts.  A good example is “You Are Not Alone,” when a fan was brought onstage to hug Michael, and he’d have to turn away from the audience as to not impact his miming.  I will point out the Live in Bucharest concert, which has a combination of live and lipsynch, to “Beat It,” performed live in epic fashion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KENnncRlHBA

“The Chain” is such a great song, especially when you take into account the backstory of Fleetwood Mac and the significance of that particular song.  I think it’s one of the greatest they wrote, and it’s actually the only song all five members of the Rumours lineup are credited on.  As a fan of Fleetwood Mac, I can say one of their greatest live performances came on the Mirage Tour in 1982: “Sisters of the Moon” from the Tusk album, with Stevie giving one of her greatest live vocals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbD4fj39pEk.  It’s a famous performance, for what people call “speaking in tongues,” when she sings the unintelligible bridge of the song.

Here’s another fantastic live performance, jumping on the train of thought of covers that arguably exceed the original, and in this case revived a career.  Tina Turner is an unequaled live singer and performer.  Of course there’s “Proud Mary,” but check out Turner singing “Let’s Stay Together” on the Private Dancer Tour in 1985.  Her voice is absolutely stunning here, with so much passion and emotion imbued into this song.  I have never seen another performer so electric, with an unparalleled and commanding stage presence, playing off the audience: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFgeOc25y8M.

Last one, the Rolling Stones singing an extended version of “Gimme Shelter,” with a piano intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yGFuX2KDQs.  This is a fantastic version of one of the greatest songs ever written.
